POLICE TROUBLE!! (Caddy DTS)

I bought a 2000 DTS with roughly 20K miles, had some 22" wheels put on it, and the next day it was stolen from the mall! The police called me to recover the vehicle which was laying on its belly... no wheels! So after sitting at the body shop for 2 weeks, untouched, I get a call from the Auto Detectives. They tell me that my car has a VATS or Passkey system and cannot be stolen without a key! They claim that their forensic locksmith checked the vehicle and declared it a "costume" theft. Meaning they believe it was stolen with a key and then the column broke to appear stolen!!! So in other words they are accusing me of stealing my own damn car!!!!! I denied any involvement and to make things better the theft was caught on video!!!! Which they finally got the tape but still continue to point the finger at me...:banghead: So today they ask me to take a poloygraph test... which I quickly agreed. Then they told me that I should be hearing form an investigator from my insurance company in the next couple of days.

So, my question is, how many other Caddy owners have had their car stolen, or know how to bypass this system? Should I just keep cooperating with them or do you think its time for a lawyer???

It is possible that someone got your VIN and through a shady dealership, or shady person at a dealer, made a key. Did you have all the keys to the car when it was stolen? Where did you buy the car? Who ever you bought it from may have had an extra key?? Just some thoughts! Good luck!

Well I bought the car on a Saturday afternoon. Then I drove roughly an hour to a rim shop to have it fitted and 22" wheels installed! The next day I went outside at noonish and washed the car/wheels.... did some runnin.... and ended up at the mall. I was in there about an hour or less and it was like the car was never even there!!!!

I seen the car since it was recovered and the outside door handle lock is punched, steering column peeled, nicks/scratches everywhere, broken glove box trim, NO WHEELS, and the list goes on! So next thing I get is harassment from the insurance company and police saying a VATS car cannot be stolen without a key!!! Like I really give a shit.... all I know is I want it back the way it was before it was stolen!!!

Now I finally called an attorney today who advised me NOT to take a polygraph due to their accuracy and it can't benefit me in any way! He feels the police have nothing and are trying to build a criminal insurance fraud case..... while the insurance company is building a civil case and getting ready to deny my claim....:frown:

VATS isnt that hard to bypass! It is normally setup to be bypassed if you have a remote start aftermarket car alarm of something. Anyone who knows the resistance of your key can bypass the circuit, with a little time. Or can use resistors are a potentiometer to dial in the resistance, and the car will start up... GM vats are also iffy, they should disable the fuel pump, but from my dealings, they never do!!

I would contact Cadillac for more info on your VATS system.
