idle problems power453c 09-17-2002, 03:04 PM
I have an 1986 f150 that is having trouble idleing. If I don't put my foot on the accelerator within about 30 seconds it will die. Also the other day I had to hit my brakes harder than usual. This did not allow the transmission to shift gears and It died. As Long as I have it in gear it will usually hold itself at around 400-600 RPMsonce it gets warmed up. This machine has throttle body injection. and a 302 cu in. 3 speed automatic with overdrive. Can any body tell me where to start looking to fix this problem. wrench_head_77 01-07-2003, 05:21 PM Sounds like the same problem that I'm having. Even after the truck is warm, it still seems to idle too slowly. See "87 F-150 EFI idles erratically" on this forum. Maybe we'll get a reply soon. w_h_77 wrench_head_77 01-21-2003, 10:48 PM I changed the EGR valve. No help. After consulting a ford owner friend, he suggested replacing the Idle Air Control Valve--also called the Idle Bypass valve. The Haynes manual shows how to test it with an ohm meter. Eureka. It is fixed. Part costs about $65. W_H_77 Related Links Enter the largest automotive community on the planet! |
