transmission woes and only 77K miles

My mom has a 1996(?) Sedan DeVille Concours. After a waterpump change, the transmission has acted up. When I drove it in 4th/Overdrive, it was fine at low speeds, but when I got up to that 4th gear, nothing but RPMS. It appears to drive fine in 3rd, but the RPMs are a bit high, due to not being in Overdrive. Her mechanic says the transmission does not go through all the gears an dwhen it gets to overdrive, nothing.

A transmission shop he recommened says that it would cost $1500.00 to "Fix" the problme but if teh discs are burnt, it would have to be rebuilt and will cost $2500.00-2800.00 to do it.

I researched the web and came across the "A" solenoid. Not sure what the function of the solenoid is, but I am assuming that it has something to do with shifting into 4th gear. And that it is buried in the transmission.

Any help would be great as my mom is on a limited income.

TIA,
Henry

You need to research how to pull up the computer codes for the car. That will tell a lot.

Welcome to AF, in addition to DfBonnett's info the trans should be scanned on a trans function scanner to confirm shift solenoid operation and look for slippage error codes, this will point to the problem.

Thanks for the info, but took teh car to the Cadillac stealer. Estimated cost was $350.00 and they think it it the solenoid too. Actual mileage was 72K not 77K. Will keep you all informed. Thanks again.

Yep, it was the solenoid, $337 plus tax to fix!
