Could be the REAR MAIN SEAL, but also the 4.0L are known to leak where the oil relocator and the engine block meet.

My '96 is leaking enough to cause the wife to push....I came into the forum looking for a quick idea, but believe the basics are best. Start at the top. The valve cover gasket is a common culprit, and it appears mine's leaking. That's not to say the rear seal isn't also. I believe there is a Tech Svc Bulletin on the rear seal regarding high dust/dirt environments. Based on the forum, I'm starting @ the top w/ the valve cover gasket.

My '94 Grand Cherokee is leaking from around the oil filter (but not at the filter gasket - more like somewhere closer to the engine). It's also dripping from somewhere up near the engine and dripping onto the exhaust pipe just below the manifold (before the Cat), and rolling off of the transmission bell housing.

When you refer to a "Rear Main Seal", is this the oil pan gasket? I'm looking online for parts and I see "Front seal", and "oil pan gasket", but I'm not certain which to purchase. Also, how easy is it to replace these gaskets? It looks like there are about 20 bolts on the oil pan, several of which are blocked by other brackets or parts.

In addition to my questions above, please let me know your thoughts on whether it's worth fixing oil leaks. Right now I'm losing about 1 quart oil per month.

Thank you!

Thanks all for your comments/advice,,,,I cleaned up bottom of Jeep with a rag and orange degeaser..It looks like some of my leak coming from oil filter "housing"..There is a seal thats between housing and engine block...There is a big "torx" head on housing that has to be removed to get to it..A co-worker of mine had same issue and said he had to almost use a breaker-bar to get it loose....It you look underneath Jeep at oil filter you will see it...Not to say my rear seal is leaking too...I think location of rear seal is between oil pan and transmission bell housing..(You also have a front seal not including valve cover gasket..and PVC valve along with oil filter housing seal).....I leak about a quart a month...I added some oil "stop-leak" you can get at auto parts stores..It helped some but still leaking a little...I will take another look at it since I cleaned it some.Where I messed up is cleaning it and letting wife drive it because "blowback" can mess you up trying to locate leak..:frown: ...Any other suggestions/info appreciated..Thanks again,Pete

The issue I ran into wasn't really cost ($5 for the set at your local Jeep 'ship) when it came to getting that filter adapter 's seals changed, but rather the clearance between that adapter and the jeep's wheelwell. A T60 torx bit + ratchet just wasnt' getting in there. . . tried vice-gripping the bit, but as 'stuck' as those things can get, and getting the vice-grips tight enough to bend the bit, the bit just rotated in the jaws of the pliers. What ended up working for my application was the torx + flex-head wrench + judicious application of force to break the bolt loose, after which I was able to switch back to th vice-grips plan because of space limits. If anyone else knows a better way, feel free to post *g*
