how to set the timing on a 95 4.3 vortec with a EDI distributorredtahoe96 11-22-2006, 05:48 PM Someone please help me, i just did an engine swap in my 95 S-10 blazer and am having problems setting the timing. I have a chilton repair manual and it tells me to pull up #1 cylinder and then position the rotor in the distributor to the #6 that is stamped inside the distributor. i did this and the engine did start once but now it cranks fast at first but then lugs and cranks slow like the timing is way off???? my repair manual also tells me that there is a #8 stamped in the distributor and i do see that but it says that is for other engines. someone please tell me how to properly set my timing. tom3 11-22-2006, 09:20 PM This is a conventional dist setup I believe on the 95. Take out number one plug and rotate the engine in the right direction until you feel compression on that cylinder, then keep rotating until the timing marks on the crankshaft balancer and pointer are lined up. Then the distributor rotor tip should be pointing at the terminal and wire for that number one cylinder, or as close as you can get it. Put all back together and the engine should start, or with the dist. somewhat loose, turn it some until the engine does fire up. I sometimes rotate the dist. with the key on and the timing light connected and triggered to flash the light when the spark jumps, gets it pretty close. Then set it with a timing light to spec. Be sure and have the timing set wire unhooked and the engine idling slowly while setting. herkyhawki 11-24-2006, 10:36 AM There is no "timing set wire" to unhook in this vehicle. The distributor drops into a fixed position with no ability to rotate it. Either it's in right or not, but you cannot roptate it if it's in right. Timing is all by computer. RedTahoe.
