Hmmm, scratch that - just been out under the car and the drive-shaft is bust. Thankfully it ain't the gearbox! Still curious about the lack of power issue though...

Hi,

My transmission died on me at 5.30 this morning and I was after a few bits of advice. The car is as per the subject line.

I was doing my usual U-turn on the main road and lost all power when the machine shifted down as I was pulling out of the corner. No gears work - indeed all there was was a hideous grating noise when I shifted into park (as i sussed it was the 'box straight away!).

So the questions:

- Any idea what may have bust to cause this?
- I'm looking to have someone else do the mucking about with it on this one; but what else is worth replacing whilst the 'box is off?
- Does the 'box drop straight out of the bottom of the car (after oilpan removal) or does it have to be lifted out the top (air intake removal; I ask as I also have to sort the distributor oil-leak and the back rocker is also shot again) ...

On a slightly different note, I'm also having a problem with power in the midrange when the car is cold (kindof lags; but is NOT missing). This also happens when the car has been running and is restarted after being parked for 30-60 mins (engine still warm). I'm guessing it is crud in the EGR system (given it has started pinging again after the timing was slightly retarded). Anything else I should look at apart from the EGR system and the distributor? Could it be the fuel mix?

Thanks in advance

Matt :banghead:

Hehe, replaced the driveshaft - the CV joint had turned to dust. No warning that was going to happen - it just died! Also changed a tie-rod end that was a bit shot on the other side and had the wheel alignment tracked up. Running nicely now.

The lack of power problem is still there, though I suspect the oil leak from the distributor is not helping matters. Cleaned up the oil to see how fast the leak is. Nipped up the rocker covers to ensure I'm looking at the distributor oil leak only ;) I guess I shouldn't be so lazy and simply clean up the EGR system/throttle body/check the air filter etc.... :(
