Battery -- specifications and requirements

I need to get a new Battery for my 1998 Chevy Prizm yet I have no spec requirement. It seems like Chevy just wants you to go to an authorized dealer to have this taken care of, but I'd rather save a little.

According to the manual, it uses a ACDelco Freedom battery but I don't know the specs for this and it doesn't look like it is sold anymore since there isn't info on the internet.

More importantly does anyone know the CCA requirement (cold crank amperage) and the "group size"? When you go into Sears there are several options and I don't know which is the right one since they list that "35" and "26R" are both appropriate group sizes.

Thanks a lot.

If you go to a self-serve place there should be a book hanging there that you can look up your vehicle and the chart will show you what battery to select. Or you can go to a auto parts store like NAPA or even SEARS and the guy behind the counter will help you select a battery.

I also had to do some research before I bought a battery. The ACDelco was rated at something like 230 CCA, and when I went to Walmart, they didn't have a car battery rated that low. So I just grabbed the cheapest one that would fit (with slight improv)...it was about $40. Walmart's Everstart brand is made by JCI Automotive's battery division.
