I just bought a 99 base 3.8 camaro and the rear end is whining. I think its the dif. but not totally sure. It starts making noise around 30 mph. The faster i go, the higher pitch it gets. around 75mph it fades down a bit. Sound like the dif.? If so what fixes it, changing the fluids? Its ALL stock, too
Also, When im going about 10 mph, i can notice a sound like as if something is dry rubbing together.

P.S.
If you change the PCV valce, remember to put the cover back on... it gets a little pissed without it lol. Took me a second to figure out what the hell was going on.

The rear end could make a few noises, depending on what the problem is. Mine started whining from around 30-45 mph under light acceleration and got louder. How many miles are on the car? Did you check the differential fluid? It might be low.

The fix is: if it's a bearing, replace the bearing. If it's one of the gears, replace those. It's a good idea to replace all the bearing too, many times you can get the master install kit cheaper if you buy gears too. I paid ~$50 for used 3.42 gears and $100 to have them installed.

Mine does it in all gear including neutral and coasting. It has 78k on it. Haven't checked the fluid yet. Was going to tonight but it ended up storming so i only got the oil done. 50$? Scrap yard or what?

I bought them off of a forum, salvage yards wanted a lot more for them. I paid the local mechanic to install them. I installed them once, would never do that again. He's owned a bunch of Camaro's, he raced them for years.

My gears started making some noise around that mileage. I had them replaced about 84k miles. Then redone a few thousand later.

a whining from the rear of the car could also be the fuel pump whining

Might be the driveshaft also. my 96 started doing roughly the same thing. there is a bushing on the driveshaft. i only discovered this after pulling my rear end apart 3 times. i noticed the tailshaft seal on the trans was leaking,so i pulled it to replace it and a brass bushing fell out. after talking to a local dealer i found out it was wear item and was included in the seal set. after replacing the seal and bushing, no more noise. hope this is a help
