1988 codes 24,27,28,29,31,41. Help!

Got all of these codes this week, although the SES light is intermitent. Cleared the codes, and they all came back. Light does not come on with engine start, but will come on after about 10 minutes of driving. Light will then go on and off. Engine still seems to run fine- no noticable difference in performance.

Codes; 24 VSS Circuit
27,28,29 Gear Switch Diagnosis
31 park / neutral switch circuit
41 Cam Sensor Circuit

Seems like a strange combination. Could it be the ECM going bad? I know the code 41 cam sensor, but if it is intermitent, would it be the magnet?

Thanks for the help

Welcome to AF. Look for corrosion at the connector on the trans or a disconnect, and/or same thing on the trans position sensor on the trans. 41 can be the sensor or the magnet.

Thanks for the thoughts. I checked all the connections- even pulled them and cleaned them. Nothing seems to help. Found a service manual on E-bay, and went through all of their checks. Can't find an issue.

One thing I did find was that the Fuild level is too high ( last oil change I got some "Help" from Jiffy Lube it seems). Was wondering if this might be causing Higher Pressure which might be causing the switches in the transmission to send off the wrong signals. If so, I can go have the transmission serviced and get the fluids back down.

Unfortunately, I work about 500 miles away from my home ( this is my away car) so I have little access to tools or a place to work on the car here.

Thanks Again for the help

Looks like the trans range slector would be the first thing to attack here then clear the codes and see whats what. I don't think the overfill is an issue with the existing codes.

Take a gander at your service manual you got and see if there is any commonality between the elec. circuits for these switches............ I have seen funny codes like this on semi's b/c they will use a common ground or something of the sort.

It sounds like a faulty ECM to me. Code 41 should trip the light continuously for sure, so from the sporadic lighting of the SES light, in addition to the perfectly fine running car this makes me say ECM. It would be possible to have a short or corrosion somewhere, but if you've already checked that...

Thanks for all the inputs. I'll give them a shot and see what comes up. I almost got a shot at a replacement ECM in the junk yard the other day, but when I went back, somone had taken it apart and taken out the Memory Module.

I would still get the ECM.!!!

. you have a memory module..

However you may have a bad CRANK sensor..
I have heard of a disintrated one throwing lots of codes..

Normally CRANKsensor will throw that 41 code CAMshaft sensor ocassionally as it fails.

You can disconnect the CAMshaft sensor and the car will still run however this test wont help you and it will throw the 41 code. It only helps the ECM decide when to pulse the fuel injection. If its not there it will guess..

Good Luck

Well, it finally died on me yesterday. Same Codes (24,27,28,29,31,41). It started running rough, lke it was only firing on maybe 4 cylinders. Tried to limp home ( about 2 miles). 1 mile from home, it started running really rugh, like only 3 cylinders, with no power. One block from home, it quit. It will turn over, but not fire.

I'm ready to donate it and start over, but wanted an opinion- could it be the ECM? I am willing to invest in a new one, but didn't want to spend any more money on this beast just to play around at trying to figure things out.

Did you check the battery connections?

I still vote ECM. The entire unit from a junkyard can be had for around $50, often less.

Assuming the ecm is replaced and you still get codes, then I'd guess The stalling sounds like it could be either the cam magnet or the crank sensor, neither of which are too horrible to do at home (if you cheat on the cam magnet at least).

Well, the problem with the car dying was the Electronic Ignition module- $700 later the car is back and running. Still have all the same codes, though. Replaced the ECM with a used one, but got the same codes. I'm to the point I think it will just go to charity. Got my eye on a 95 with low miles- may start over again!
