A new type of fuel gauge problem??

My wife’s 2005 Montana has the fuel gauge going crazy. But it seems to be slightly different from the typical sending unit problem.

At any given time the gauge will display an overfilled condition. (Needle cranked over to the temperature gauge)

Now here is the odd part. If the key is cycled between the off and ACC positions the gauge will lower and indicate the proper fuel level. In extreme cases it may take 3 or 4 key cycles to return the gauge to the proper position.

It almost acts like the gauge loses its "home position" (Empty) and gets reset by the key cycles.

Has anyone have an Idea what could be causing this?

Oh and of course it just turned 40,000 miles or I would be at the dealer getting the answer.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the ideas, I have read your post and it dosen't sound like fun. Right now my van is running good and no MIL light. I don't know I guess I'll have to take it to get read and see if any codes appear. The gauge was working great yesterday but today its goofier than ever. I wish it would just work or break so I would have something to work with. But I'm with you on the I want to know first before I just go out and throw money at a suspected problem.
