1988 ford tbird 302 gas milage

im getting 9.7 gas milage driving it slow any ideas why ? ive changed fuel filter spark plus wires oil disrupter silnoid etc.... my tierod ends need changed besides that any ideas how to get better gas milage it is a 5.0 302 with 174k miles on it tho

My 86 gets 20-21 highway, and I drive the hell out of it. Make sure your tires are properly inflated and that the brakes are properly adjusted, and the front calipers aren't sticking. Also, make sure to remove any excess weight you may have bouncing around in the trunk. Did you change the air filter too? Take a blowgun and blow into the hole in the side of the airbox that's not hooked to the motor to make sure there's nothing jammed in the intake silencer.

Check that you have a 192 or 195 degree thermostat and that your engine is at the correct operating temperature.

Check the oxygen sensor and any of the countless sensors that deal with the fuel to air mixture and the timing could affect it to.
