AWD tranny in a FWD car...Mikelb 10-18-2006, 09:30 PM Got a question... Not looking to do a swap (yet)... but I need a tranny, all I can find is AWDs If I were to buy an AWD and new axles (gotta buy anywayz)... couldn't I drop that in my FWD car... What else would I need besides the tranny and axles (no smart ass comments like fluid,etc...)... I would have to buy the welded VCU or something like that? or could I buy the JDM switchable trans... Would I need a new clutch/flywheel? All input is appreciated... Blackcrow64 10-18-2006, 09:36 PM Are you planning on leaving it just FWD or converting it to AWD? Thor06 10-18-2006, 09:38 PM I wouldnt run a AWD tranny with out the driveshaft connected. If you want to do the AWD swap more power to you, but just an AWD tranny running FWD isnt a good idea. Mikelb 10-18-2006, 09:42 PM well FWD for now... I'd like AWD... but don't currently have that kinda money... I just thought it would be easy to buy the switchable tranny Blackcrow64 10-18-2006, 09:48 PM I just thought it would be easy to buy the switchable tranny Won't that be more money than to do the actual AWD conversion though? Thor06 10-18-2006, 09:59 PM Werent you the guy that is probably going to be getting an AWD anyway? I would just take all the shit you could off the FWD, put it on the AWD, put the FWD as close to stock as you can, and sell the FWD. Mikelb 10-18-2006, 10:01 PM Won't that be more money than to do the actual AWD conversion though? I think I could have the switchable tranny (ebay) and axles for a/b $1k... how much would it cost to do the AWD swap (I've heard $6k)... Blackcrow64 10-18-2006, 10:29 PM I think I could have the switchable tranny (ebay) and axles for a/b $1k... how much would it cost to do the AWD swap (I've heard $6k)... :eek7: Who told you 6k?? I would think it to be nearing to 1-1.5k... EDMUND65 10-18-2006, 10:54 PM why would it hurt it? i've heard poeple leaving the t-case off and running it that way... Mikelb 10-18-2006, 11:06 PM I feel like the tcase would be taking power from the Front wheels... and the $6k was just a figured from some magazine article that did a swap some years back (when parts were more expensive) and I'm not sure, but that may have been a non-turbo, to turbo AWD... Mikelb 10-18-2006, 11:24 PM Werent you the guy that is probably going to be getting an AWD anyway? I would just take all the shit you could off the FWD, put it on the AWD, put the FWD as close to stock as you can, and sell the FWD. Ah yeah, sry... I just looked up and read your post... my loan fell through this afternoon... My car's not running... The Tranny was destroyed... I don't have the time to part it out before the other guy gets his sold... and I need $2200... so there's no way that will happen... so I'm just going to continue and get mine back running... sry Mikelb 10-19-2006, 02:00 PM OK, so the general concensus is: It's not the smartest thing to do, but it will work and give me a reliable daily driver... ^riiight? Let me get the parts list straight: AWD tranny (1st gen, so the mounts are all correct) AWD front Axles Now, do I HAVE to have the following: AWD Clutch/flywheel AWD slave (any difference?) AWD shifter cables (different?) transfer case or anything else? Blackcrow64 10-19-2006, 02:36 PM I donno if I would call it reliable but it'll work for a while... Mikelb 10-19-2006, 02:38 PM I donno if I would call it reliable but it'll work for a while... what would take away from it's reliability? I'm trying to get my DD back as cheap as possible, without taking away it's dependability/longevity... vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
