Hi,

I own a 99 grand am se 6 cyl, I have the same problem and it is driving me freaking nuts!!! I have had a mechanic look at it and he thinks I have a short in one of the wires and it could take an hour to 8 hours to try to find the problem. He did replace the hazard button but it he didn't help. So if anyone has any ideas that would be great!

Well it usually is the hazzard switch in the dash that cuases this. Some GA's were on a recall because of this.

If replacing it didnt work,
it could be the multifunction switch is going bad.
Or the mechanic didnt really replace anything :dunno:

And Welcome to AF !

Well no new topic needed. Same stupid clicking noise. I got it and took it back to the dealer and of course after 2 trips it did not click for them.

It goes away too. Maybe a week or 2 and limited to no clicking. Then this week it freaking clicks like 100 times in a row. I turn up the radio and ignore it.

I gutted the monsoon radio out though and still have every part if someone wants it?

I put in Infinity speakers and a Pioneer head unit w/ subs and Infinity 611a amp. My rear view mirror tilts down everytime since I replaced the 10's with 12's.

Anyway.. This ticking.. Try a fuse? I was thinking it might have been the turn signal relay.

It sounds just like the turn signals are on but a much more rapid and random ticking noise.. Could I be correct?

What does the SS have over the GT?

Greg, your 02 had a recal for defect on that hazzard relay(which is the turn relay also). Located in the radio bezel.

On the SS,
:naughty: - wouldn't you like to know

thier isnt really a GA SS, just My SE ,
is or soon will be SS'd with some boost

2001 Grand AM I also had "ticking" your not crazy.

The turn signal switch is bad. When replaced it will happen again.
Try not to hold the turn signal when passing or while on Interstates. This seems to help it along.

Mine doesn't always do it but sometimes it likes to complain for a day or so.

Thats all I got.

It's the multifunction switch that is the culprit. By either replacing it or taking it apart and cleaning it, putting some dielectric grease on it usually cures it. Do a search here and the steps to do it are there are not that hard. I just can't remember the thread. It's a crock of crap but a new switch, one out of the wreckers or cleaning it are the option

If the switch in the radio bezel has been replaced(the hazzrd switch/relay) then It probly is the MFS and a cleaning can help.
But it is possible that the same switch has failed again.
Not sure if thiers a bad batch of them out thier or what.

But I have heard that several Grand Am owners that have had it replaced only to do it again. Though it does have a relay switch inside just as ordinalry relay would, and they do go bad, when they decide.

Here is the thread with the disaseembly process.

Hope that helped!

f your turn signal demon is still present, here is your solution!

My 01 Grand Am had this same problem and many others that I've talked to have had the same problem on others years as well.

It's been a year since I've done this, but here are the basics. Take the plastic clam-shell off the top of the steering column. This will simply pull apart with a little effort. You will probably need a small screw driver of some kind to take out the screws holding the turn signal/wiper control machanism. There are also a couple of electrical connections that need to be disconnected. Make sure that it pulls out smoothly, don't try and force it. I don't know how much they cost to replace but what a hassle that would be. Anyway, once you've got that out take it inside so you can take it apart over a counter or table with good lighting. Remove the screws holding the two halves together. NOTE: there is a small spring that might come out of one of the sides, make sure you get that back in and don't lose it. Now you should see the contacts that make the turn and wiper levers work. Very likely you will see the contacts covered in a copious amount of grease. Clean that off with some Q-tips or something non-abrasive like a can of compressed air. Keep enough grease on there to retain smooth operation of levers. Reassemble and reinstall in car. NOTE: there may be a small pin on the top of the steering column that has to be pushed in to allow the mechanism to slide back in. There are also guides to make sure its seated properly.

This worked like a charm for me and I didn't have to hassle with some dealer who wanted to charge me an arm and a leg to replace everything.

Good luck!:smooch:
