1998 Chevy Blazer "Bad Gas, Air sensor"

I have a 1998 Chevy Blazer V-6 Vortec. I thought that I bought some bad gas because my car would some what loose horse power and would jerk a little when approaching 50 mph. I would hit the gas the rpm's would go up to 3k or so and would not go any faster. My mechanic told me that I may have bad gas because he could hear some spark knocking when you did this. I added some Sea-Foam to the fuel and ran that tank out. I had an engine light come on, we put in on the diagnostic machine when running it and it said bad air flow sensor. I bought a new one installed it and added more Sea-Foam to my next tank.

It's still running like crap. Herky Jerky when you hit 50 mph. I use to be able to hit the gas and take off fast. I can't get the power that I use to have and can only go 55 with the pedal to the floor.

Any suggestions. I'm scheduled to get a front drive shaft put in tomorrow, but I doubt this has anything to do with it.

Thanks,

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Remove the air cleaner assembly from the engine.

If equipped, unplug the valve electrical connection.

Remove the EGR valve vacuum tube from the valve.

Remove the EGR bolts and/or nuts and remove the EGR valve and gasket.

To install:

Install a new gasket to the EGR valve and install the EGR valve to the manifold.

Install the nuts and/or bolts. Tighten the bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm) and the nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).

Connect the vacuum tube to the EGR valve.

If equipped, attach the valve electrical connection.

Install the air cleaner and connect the negative battery cable.

No, listen, he has a 1998. That is for aa 1995 or older TBI system.

This sounds like someone needs to do a tuneup.

Get this, so my mechanic put in a new fuel filter. I told him about your comments and copied him the post above. I'm not sure if he looked at it. I'm going to see him in an hour. Anyway, he left me a voice mail saying that it is a bad CAT Converter. Do you think this makes sense. Oh yeah, in his testing he broke the Os Sensor and he said that it drives fine but we'll need to replace that. So with the spark knock (detonation) would a bad CAT cause this or would the EGR valve. By the way, the valve run about $204 up in in Upper Michigan. Should I get the CAT taken care or the EGR.

I'm going to check the spark plugs tonight to see if there fouled up. I don't see why the blazer would run normal with the O2 out if the CAT is Bad. Any help would be great in making this costly decision. Either way I'm going to have to pay. I just don't want to do a double header.

Thanks,

Thanks,

the egr valve doesnt have to be replaced....it can be cleaned
after removel of the egr vavle turn the motor over and blow out the
carbon.........my mech fixed mine and after cleaning the egr valve
ran a 2 part cleaner one goes in the fuel rail(presurerized)
and the second goes in the gas tank, ran about $80 us for the cleaning
pulling the egr valve and cleaning it was around $100
and thats been 8 mths ago and is working fine to this day

Thanks,

If he destroys the O2 sensro, he has to pay for it. Don't allow him to bullcrap you into thinking "it had to be changed anyway". That is him trying to get out of paying for it.

Don't replace the EGR unless you are getting a code for it. If the cat is plugged, replace the cat. Very cheap, maybe $150 installed.

Don't pay a DIME MORE!
