Oil change concern... ataririder 10-10-2006, 12:10 AM
I recently bought a 2003 Silverado 5.3 Ext. Cab. Man I love this truck! Ok, my first oil I noticed something was wrong. The oil level was fine when I checked it pre-oil change. I drained the oil and notice that it had almost 6 quarts of oil! Is this normal because I refilled it at 4 1/2 and it looked normal on the dip stick. What is your average number of quarts when filling her up? PS This is with an oil filter change also. sc_customs 10-10-2006, 01:18 AM I put 6 quarts in my 4.8...if that tells you anything. (Mobil 5w/30 full synthetic) Rmbodie 10-10-2006, 06:06 AM I have only changed my 02' 5.3 once but I used a 5 guart jug and at least another half a quart from another big jug . Rob Sonny01 10-10-2006, 07:17 AM My 2000 5.3 takes 6 quarts with filter change and 5 without...I've never changed the oil without changing the filter... chuck16 10-10-2006, 12:17 PM Don't forget all the places oil can rest. The filter takes almost 1 liter by itself. .. Just my :2cents: worth jeverett 10-10-2006, 02:40 PM Crank the truck up after 5 quarts, check again and add MT-2500 10-10-2006, 02:57 PM I recently bought a 2003 Silverado 5.3 Ext. Cab. Welcome on your first post on AF. What does your owners manual say. What does the dip stick say with only 4 1/2 qts? MT ataririder 10-11-2006, 01:06 AM thanks for a warm welcome. The manual doesn;t say how much to put it just what grade to use. I put a total of 5 1/2 quarts and it sits just right on the dip stick. It just boggled me because my LT1 take 4 1/2 and thats 5.7 but then again they don't share the same oil pan. Thanks for the replies fellas. Rmbodie 10-13-2006, 06:06 AM Your LT1 and my LS1 have similar oil pans . Shallow and wide . Ground clearance a big issue of course . Engine design dictates that trucks will work harder than cars with the same engine so they want more oil present for internal cooling for bearings that don't have the benifit of water . Rob ColoradoSilverado 10-13-2006, 07:08 AM I've had my 2000 5.3 for 18 months now and changed the engine oil 6 times now. It doesn't burn a drop and always fill it up with 6 quarts with a new filter. Also.. a filter does not take 1 litre of oil.. it may take up to 1 quart. but not 1 litre. :) ColoradoSilverado 10-13-2006, 07:44 PM The owner's manual will state how much.. it is in the capacity section..
