Low Coolant Light on 2000 Century?

Hello!

we have a 2000 century and the low coolant light has been on forever. It was given to us with the light on and told "not to worry about it" but I would like it off ;)

we have had the coolant checked and check it often, car doesn't overheat, there is coolant IN there...

any ideas on what to do? We are getting ready to sell it and take the dive into a minivan (3 kids, ya know ;) ) and would like to have it in good running order to get the most out of it that we can.

thanks!

Welcome to AF.

As long as you have confirmed the coolant level is good you may have a bad coolant level sensor. It's located on the right hand side (passenger) of the radiator. Approximately 4 inches below the radiator filler neck and cap on the engine side adjacent to the battery. The module is about 2" X 2" square with an electrical connector, grayish in color.

Sometimes cleaning the end of the sensor will bring it back to life.
If not a new sensor would be in order.
When cold pull rad cap and make sure coolant is up to the top of the rad.and over the sensor end.
If not full and coolant over full has coolant in it replace rad cap.
Good Luck

Sometimes when die is added to your cooling system to check for leaks ie; head gaskets the die will put a coating over the end of the sensor not allowing it to read correctly.therefore even if the reservoir is full the sensor cant determine this.

I had a 2000 Buick Century. Its a nice car. I had a low coolant light. I replaced the low coolant sensor and that fixed the low coolant light problem. About 3 months later I got another low coolant light. I ordered another new sensor and put it in the car. I still got the low coolant light after installing the second new sensor. The rad had enough coolant and the overflow jug was up to normal level. I just said the heck with it and unplugged the low coolant sensor. Levels are still okay today. Maybe the replacement parts are no darn good. Who knows.
