Difficulty starting B250, smoke in the air intake

'91 B250 Van 5.2 ... She ran great for a while, then slowly had trouble starting. It cranks but won't really start. I got it to start once by giving it more throttle, but it ran at high RPMs, and switching into gear didn't help, so I shut her down. Next I noticed smoke coming from the air intake/filter area. Looks and smells like gas.... I'm clueless... maybe a sensor??? If someone knows what I can do, I would greatly appreciate it!

I have had similar problems with my 96 318 and my wifes 95 jeep...... The jeep had spark, the van did not. Turns out the ignition coil was bad in both cases... both these vehicles use the same coil and they both failed the same way... water got in and the laminations corroded thus damageing the windings. On the van, I notice that the condensation from the AC splashes on the coil when the vehicle is being driven.

Hmmm... thinking... thinking...
First thank you for the reply.
I guess it could use a tune up. My van gets spark though, and it runs beautifully once it's started up, just doesn't want to start unless I trick the computer. The AC hasn't run since I got it, but maybe moisture could get in there another way. It gave me fault codes for a lean fuel mixture (code 51), which implied to me a bad MAP sensor. I replaced, and it fired right up, then acted up again the next day. I tried the O2 sensor, and went through the exact same routine with that. So one day I tried to trick the computer by puting in the old MAP, clear the code, and then starting. It was instant start up. But once again, the next day, it won't. Now I am twiddling my thumbs. You think a new ignition coil? that will set me back 15 bucks, not too bad, I will try it.

thank you aaachris,
I would have never gotten this fixed without your advice.
Not only was the ignition coil bad, but as I was removing it, I noticed the three plugs connecting to the throttle body with a vacumm line, not all the plugs were plugged in. The wire connection at the coil was totally corroded too. I'll be replacing plugs and wires to finish the job.
thanks!
