I decided to buy the new 2002 VW GTI GLX with a 6 speed manual and 204 horspower but some of my friends consider it to be a girls car, what do you guys think?

I don't think that they are a chick car but I see quite a few girls driving them around here.

I think the GTi is as far from a girls car as it gets. I have a 97 Driver's Edition VR6 and I love it. I'm not as big on the MK4 chassis as the MK3, but it is still a great car.

the girls car idea comes from there being so many unmodded veedubs being driven by chicks...
let your friends tell you its a chick car, then take all their chicks from em w/ it...
and then blow their doors off w/a torquey 204 hp...

im sure the vw sport cabrio was not a chick car, especially after the vr6 swap w/a six spd and 18s...

What kind of stupid statement is that... the 2002 1.8T puts out about 180 hp, and with some mods, you can pull out lots more power.. And who cares if its an automatic... Are you saying automatics cant be fast? If you are you dont know much about cars.

No way I a GTI a girls car, unless she can handle all that power......I have a 95 Golf3 GTI VR6......with 172 stock horse power and with endless engine and other upper grade, a GTI can reach up to 300+ horses......

Hmmm, a 4 valve, DOHC VR6 with 204 hp, a 6 speed stick, and big wheels. If this is a girls car, then there must be NO men with Corvettes! This is a little corker of a car, and if you like it, get it! (Although I would go for a WRX, but thats just me)

Autos can be fast, but they arent as fast as stick-shifts. Not by a long shot. If they were, than F1, CART, NASCAR, IRL, etc, etc, wouldnt use sticks, they would use slushboxes. So there.

Who ever calls that car a "girls car" I need to have a word with you. That car not a girls car. Now a white 80's cabrio with a black is a "girls car". Dude that 2K2 GTi is the ish. That car is mean as hell. I would rock that car all the way to Japan and spit on the Honda headquaters in that car and feel pround!!!! Peace.

No, I haven't bought one already, I'm waiting till april for the dealers to get the 24v 201hp model.

There is no such thing as a girls car. I see as many women as men driving 911s around the bay area. Does this mean they are a chick car? OK there is a difference between "chick" and woman and that is that the chick mostly has a lower income than a woman (or man) so the car a rich female drives differs due to the price range they can afford. So a rich man drives a luxury sedan/convertible, a richer man drives a high performance car such as the 911 GT2, a rich female drives a luxury sedan/convertible and a richer woman drives a boxter or a 911 cab or as I see here around the bay area some drive 911 Turbos :licker:

As a former GTI VR6 owner I can say go and buy one if you like the car. One of the reasons I ditched my GTI was that the customer service quality you get from the dealers around here sucks. I do not want to create another label for the GTI but another reason was the fact that I am getting old, I no longer belong in a Golf :)

I think the last Car and Driver listed the 0-60 for the 2k2 1.8T (I purchased one last October or so :D ) around 6.5, and the quarter mile at 15.3.

I'm not sure how realistic those are in day to day driving consitions, but there is some kick in the turbo at 1700 - 1800 RPM's or so when I drive around town normally.

Autos are alot better in 1/4mile with high hp high dispacement cars.

F1 CART IRl does NOT use stick-shfts. F1 is electronically controlled sequencial 6 or 7 speed gears. CART and IRL uses similar set up as motor cycle sequential gear box with machanical linkage. Nascar uses traditional 4 speed "stick shift". One of the Can-Am car back in the day used 3 speed auto.

I don't think the GTi is a girls car because I actually see more and more girls drive Jetta's instead of GTi's.
But anyway there is no such thing as a girls car, any car could be a girls car, even a Ferrari Modenna!!!!! or a Huge GMC truck!!!!!

your friends have mistaken your gti for a basic 2.0l 8v golf or jetta automatic. never have i seen a girl drive a gti.

:flipa: you poeple who believe that some one can not handle the power of a car because of there gender are way out in left field. We as men are more careless on the road as gender, hence the higher insurance rates. A woman who drives more cautiously and has a cheaper insurance is said to be unable to handle a cars power .

Next time you get into the gas look over at your girlfriends face and eye's and see she's excited but scared because there not in control just like any other passenger. I own a 87' euro gti suspension and exhaust tricked out but engine and intake mostly stock saving for a syncro 1.8t shell but it will do 220 kmh easy my girl dig going to the nurnburg ring just as much as i do on the weekends hell couple more weeks of going down there she'll be close to my lap time. A Gti is a car who is loved by many Men Woman chick dude and what ever you want to call them but come over her and you'll see many females blowin' your door's off on the outbahn.

my experience has left me to conclude most girls suck at drivng. i just graduated and there were a large majority of girls who crashed the brand new car daddy bought them within a months time sometimes repeatedly; of course the were a few guys but nothing to compare to the girls. :smoka:

Girls car? Im sorry, but being a "girl" I feel I should defend us women on this one. There is no such thing as a "boy" car or "girl car" You make it what you want to make it. I've seen plenty of very nice cabrios fixed up, and driven by men. And some very nice GTIs fixed up and driven by women. I drive a 2L 16v A1 GTI with all the works, or how about my lowered A2 GTI ... "girly"?, yea, cause I made them what they are, but theres nothing funner than giving the "boys" a good spankin' when they need it. I'm sorry but if your nervous that your buddies are gonna tease you for driving a "girls" car, try to gain a wee bit more self confidence and make it yours. ;)

I'm a girl and I drive a 202hp gti vr6, and I don't think its a typical girl car. Plus its fun to race all the boys in their eclipse's just to roll down the tint and smile.. they love that.. their expressions are priceless :)

But yeah, all the girls in salt lake drive silver civics with roxy stickers on the back, sometimes they get crazy and buy a vtec prelude or something, but most of us aren't running around begging daddy for a gti, we're a small few. so yeah, i wouldn't worry about your friends, they want your car.

no there is nothing that car can be called but amazing, it has an 5 cylinder turbo that puts out over 600-900 rwhp depending on how well they can strap it to the dyno. that car makes me wonder why I ever sold my old diesel golf instead of getting a vr6 with and quattro transmission and doing the conversion to super sleeper.

uh...tell my bro who's a 250 lb korean guy that gti's are gurly cars. he jus bought a 91.

really there are a few gurlish cars (miata, beetle etc..) but really if u like the car, it REALLY doesn't matter wut others think.

ight this is an old post but im a girl and i had an 02 jetta vr6 w. the 200hp 195 trq but it got totalled.....and now i have an 04 gti vr6....with the same engine but its the 6 speed n somewhere in the post someone said that guys put cool mods on the car...wait til im done with my car...my shit is out ...and im stickin with neuspeed (pflo,pchip,catback,struts,sways,suspension) and then hi flow cat and brospeed headers...and you dont thnk my shit will be out on any guys?

ok for ricer over there chanting about automatics, have u ever drivin a pre tiptronic vw automatic? they are the most basic transmissions your ever going to drive. and their horrible gear ratios will still slow any cost efficient shift improver. for these everyday people automatics ARE slow. now 1.8t automatics are nothing to laugh due to the tiptronic gearbox that brings u one step closer to a manual shift. when it comes to volkswagens, manuals are faster. not everyone has money and resourses ya kno

there are no guy or girl cars. a car is characterised by the way it is driven. if i drove my 190bhp 90' Gti at 30mph only on the right lane, then yes it would look like a girl car-or why not- my grandfather's car... the driver is the soul of a car and the way of his or her driving makes the car what it is. and there are out there some girls that take the smile of some guys off their faces at the trafic lights....
my friend, just take the car and leave your friends saying whatever they want...if they could afford it-or if they had the brains to understand the real value of a car-, they would also have a Gti!

anything that has the amount of HP that the dahlback has is not a chic car. Your friends are just jealous...
