96 Cavalier gas smell, no noticable leak...krohn211 09-18-2006, 10:16 PM We have a cavalier that has a gas smell with no noticable leak. The gas mileage has been about normal but the smell of gas is worrisome. Any ideas on why it might smell like gas? Thanks. G0ldRush 09-18-2006, 11:39 PM It's probaly a leaking Oring from one of the injector, if the gas smell only noticible in engine running that's the problem, otherwise leak could come from gas steel pipe rusting!!! mike2004tct 09-19-2006, 07:34 AM Might be an overflowing charcoal cannister. It's located in the right fender well in fornt of the tire. This is part of the emmissions system that recirculates unused gas and gas vapors. spyidy 03-26-2007, 05:07 PM your gas tank might be rotten, mine rotted out on the top and i had to replace it. 1998 z24. nightflyr 03-28-2007, 05:28 PM I'm going thru a similar thing (ref my post same page). The gas smell is very noticeable (at times) while stopped, and disappears at highway speeds. I have one injector that shows signs of a leak since dirt has collected around this one injector. However, the auto mechanic (took it to local shop) says he doesn't think the injector is the problem, nor can he find it. I told him to keep the car a day and run an errand with it, the gas smell will be quite obvious. I think it is the injector, but i'll keep you posted on what he finds. DeCiX 03-28-2007, 09:27 PM had this same problem, it was our fuel injectors. hope this helps. do it yourself please.....my parents did it, cost us freaking $1500, and they blew out my serpintine belt in the process we think. shakewell 03-28-2007, 11:32 PM My 97 2.4 just started doing this today. I think it's either the fitting at the fuel rail or the fuel pressure regulator. My plan, and what you guys might want to do, is to spray some brake clean (or something similar that will dry it out) around the suspect area to totally dry them out. Run it for a time and check where it gets wet. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
