I have a slight gasoline smell when i am sitting in park or at a stoplight for a minute or so, the RPM are slighty higher when in park than normal. I also have a shaking steering wheel when braking and at speeds around 75-80 on the highway.

thanks guys

Kevin

Which engine do you have and year model Alero?

Have you checked under the hood to make sure no fuel is leaking. What are the rpms reading in park?

The shaking when braking sounds like your disc rotors have excessive lateral runout (warpage). How long has it been since the last brake job?

sorry, i have the 3.4 V6 2001...

i have looked for gas leaks but may not be looking in the right places, where would you suggest looking?

as for the RPM's they will normally run at 750 but right after i start for about 2 or 3 mins they will be double that at 1500

Just do a visually inspection around the area of the upper intake manifold an fuel injector rails.

But it sounds like your problem is a defective idle air controller (IAC). Its located on the throttle body. You can try removing it and cleaning with throttle body spray cleaner. Spray the spring loaded pintle on the IAC and the seat where it mounts on the TB.

i located where the leak is comming from it seems to be from what i think is the IAC located behind the black throtle control, what steps can i take to make it stop?

You're welcome.

The IAC is that black round module located on the right hand side of the TB. There is an o-ring seal so check that out. Best thing to do is replace the IAC complete so you do not get any reoccurring problem. Good luck.

sorry, the leak is not the IAC, it is comming from a smaller connector,(it looks like a sensor of some sort) under the throttle body and it has a gold colored nut under the sensor

If the item you are talking about is under the left hand side of the throttle body looking from driver's side in then that is the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT) so the leak you found is coolant not fuel.
