New elec Fuel Pump and code P0172

1998 Venture. Could this code be caused by an improper seal around the fuel pump? I don't seem to get "blow out" from the fuel tank when removing the gas cap, so I am kind of assuming that the seal must have slipped out of position as the retaining ring was tightened. Does that sound likely? If so, could that cause a fuel to rich on bank 1 P0172 code? I know these things can be really pressure sensitive.

Thanks for any assistance!
Erik T.

Welcome to AF, this code is just what it says too rich a fuel mixture, not related to tank sealing. Misfire, leaking injector, excess fuel pressure, lots of possibilities that require proper diagnosis.

Thanks for the response. I realize that the codes are very specific, and say what they mean. I was just wondering if it could be a cause and effect thing. My thought was if pressure does not hold in the tank, the pump may be trying to over compensate by over pressurizing the line. If that is not a possibility, that's fine, it was just a hypothesis.

In any case, I'm waiting to run it out of gas so that I can drop the tank to check the seal.

Anyone have any neat tricks on how to hold that seal in position while you tighten the retaining ring?

Thanks,
Erik T.

The tank seal will affect the evap emissions test but it will not cause the rich mixture, see my original post, possible it has the wrong fuel pump for the car but that is slim. The pump doesn't know or care about tank pressures.
