1997 Riviera Traction Control light

My 1997 Riviera with 81,000 miles has an intermittent problem with the Traction Control light on the dash. At times, the light will stay on when starting the car and other times it will go off, as it should when the car is started. I noticed that if I turn the key from off to run several times, the light will eventually go off and then will stay off when the car is started; however sometimes, no matter how many times I turn the key from off to run, the light will not go off. I don't notice any difference in driving weather the light is on or off, I do however have a trans shift problem (see previous thread) which I don't think is related to the traction control since that problem can occur weather the light is on of off while driving. Can anyone tell me if the traction control light is a true problem with the traction control itself or just a malfunction of the computer?

the trac off light will come on when the pcm cant read "things" to correct wheel spin...at least thats what i gather. it detects the spin based off of a few sensors like wheel speed, rpm, crank position, and im sure a few other things like the tranny, brakes. so it could be on b/c of the problem with your tranny. i would get it scaned to see what codes are pending.

Wheel sensors can cause this.. It takes a cool $200 to replace the correct one. The part alone is $120..

Good Luck
