97 Steering column lock

I've never run into this problem before so before I take the covers off of the column I figured I'd ask if anyone else had had this problem and how did they fix it. The key went in fine and I started the car with no problem but when I shut it off I couldn't get it to go to the Lock position to remove the key. I should add that it isn't due to wear since the car has less then 8,000 miles on it!

Did you put the car in park?

Of course.

where your wheels turned far enough to engage the lock? I've turned the car off with the wheels turned and had it lock the key before. If that's the problem all you have to do is turn your steering wheel enough to release the key.

You need to check the shift lock actuator.
