cracked timing cover

I have a problem. I have a 95 blazer with 130000 miles. I had to pull the distributer to do some work. I had also just replaced the spider assembley a few weeks ago (just a little background). I put everything togher and I could not get it to start. I was getting spark and fuel but still nothing. I figured timing was off. I tried adjusting the timing but could not get it. While turning it over to check if I had fixed the problem it seemed to backfire. Well it started leaking oil. upon inspection, the timing cover is cracked. Its crack on both sided about even with the top of the dampner. What could have caused this? I know it is going to be a job to just replace the timing cover and I dont know if I want to get involved if somethig major is broken. Iif anybody can give me any insight it would be appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

Only thing I can think of is that when you were maybe turning the crank you pushed to hard into the cover... Outside of that I would have to say that's a strange occourance. Can you post a pic?
