I came across a 96 Grand Cherokee Limited with 126Kmi for $4500. Is this a good deal and what are some of the problem areas for this jeep?

I got a similar deal on a 95 v8. But the quad trac was going. So i replaced it with a select trac. only real weak link I know of is the viscous coupler in the quadra trac transfer case. I6 engine is the best but everyone seems to like the idea of the v8 in it. comes down to personal preference.

I know the I6 is a really good engine but this has the v8, so how long do these last until the engine starts to go? It has alot already but i dont want do drop $4500 on it and 10kmi later i lose compresson or etc.

Mines a 95 5.2 v8. (318) It had 117,000 miles on it 1 1/2 years ago when I bought it. The 318 is one of chryslers oldest and best v8 s ever. If it was taken care of 200,000 + miles is not unreasonalble. I have 124,000 miles now and still runs like new. If it does go this engine is very popular and easy to find in junk yards and parts stores as rebuilds. Used in jeeps and chrysler cars and trucks for years. I gave 4,000 for mine. The price was great but the guy i bought it from thought the drive train was shot. It was just the vc in the transfer case. as I said earlier I just replaced with a better case. Just drive it until it is heated up real good and take slow sharp turns in a parking lot to see if it crow hops or makes popping sounds at the front. sure signs that the vc is going. About 1500 to fix.

bought a Keyless remote with no programming for my 96 grand Cherokee Limtied. can i program it myself or have to get dealer to do it? i was told to open driver door, turn switch on, lock doors from driver lock and point remote to bulb on ceiling and hold Lock down until doors unlocked. there's no bulb on ceiling. may be because of the sunroof. any help?

That's for early model infrared remotes, yours is dealer only.

sounds like a great deal, low miles for a jeep.
When I bought my jeep 3 years ago, 94 Grand Cherokee Limited 5.2L, it had 183K miles I paid $3500 for it but I got an extra engine tranny and transfer case with it. now it has 216K mileson it and still running strong.

The VC is deffinately a big problem in the quadra-trac transfer case, they ussually go out around 120K miles, so if it hasn't gone bad and replace yet, be expecting it, I was fortunate mine was replaced within 3,000 miles of me buying my jeep, thats why I got the extra Engine/tranny/transfer case with it.

Jeep have alot of tendency's my the VC is prolly one of the only problems. The 318/360 engines do ping (ball bearing rattling in the engine while under load), There are 2 TSB about it and several write-ups. The 4.0L are known for head gasket going bad.
