The story begins driving in traffic. it starts backfiring, sputtering, and shooting sparks and flames. So me and my dad put in new spark plugs and a new distributer cap, rotor. After driving it around there was still a heavy rattling and would hesitate when i accelerated every 5 seconds... the lights would flicker... thats basically it. What engine do you have, and how many miles?

Have you replaced the plug wires?

How long since you replaced the air filter?

Sounds like you should check the alternator and battery because of the lights flickering.
