98 cherokee, key stuck in ignition...car n00b 08-10-2006, 11:35 PM Ok so i just got my first car (98 jeep cherokee) and tonight me and my mom were goin through all the keys the dealership gave us (5). shes takes the 3 keys that dont have keyless entery things on them and tells me to go make sure all of them start the car. So i take key 1...start car---turn car off(didnt move anything)...take key 2--put key in , key gets stuck. I cant move key really anywhere either direction, the steering wheel seems locked, and the shifter looks and feels like its in full park. I tried to push key in further and pull out and didnt work. Please help me get this sorted out. AlohaBra 08-10-2006, 11:51 PM Turn it back to the off position, you might have to turn it hard. Sounds like maybe the cut isn't good or the tumbler is worn. car n00b 08-11-2006, 12:59 PM Turn it back to the off position, you might have to turn it hard. Sounds like maybe the cut isn't good or the tumbler is worn. When i put the key in, i didnt move it at all. Its still in the off position. AlohaBra 08-11-2006, 02:00 PM Get a pair of vise grips on it and try and pull straight out without breaking it. You can use WD40 if you want. thinmints 08-11-2006, 08:54 PM Get a pair of vise grips on it and try and pull straight out without breaking it. You can use WD40 if you want. Being a former locksmith i would advise against that , anyway, have you tried to move the steering wheel back and forth while you try to get the key out or even to get it to turn in either direction? if that doesnt work than use the WD40 SPARINGLY because eventually the lock will get all gummed up with dust and dirt:screwy: AlohaBra 08-11-2006, 10:12 PM I will defer to thinmints about forcing out the key, but if you can't get it out you are going to have to remove and replace the ignition lock unit. Or you are going to take it to a locksmith or back to the dealer and that what they will have to do. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
