89' XJ Larado, heats up when idling(slow) As soon as you bring the RPM's up it will cool back to about 190-210. I am thinking the water pump. Also I would like to do away with the clutch fan and go with an electric, any ideas?

1) Bad electric fan motor or sensor (this should kick on once the vehicle reaches 220 degrees, if it doesn't…it's bad)
2) Bad clutch fan (this is designed to spin on a clutch system, if it fails you will overheat in the city very quick)
3) Bad radiator (plugged or broken fins will cause an XJ to overheat)
4) Plugged coolant passages in the engine block. (typically manifested by highway overheating)
5) radiator dirty from off roading.Fins not getting enough cooling air.


typical causes. acts like clutchfan.:rolleyes:

Sorry for the in-ept info , I have found with the already existing electric running (jumper the sensor) that the engine runs fairly descent(180-210). But after a long idling period the engine will begin to heat up unless I bring the RPM's up to about 2K, then I can watch the temp guage drop to a normal temp immediatly. The radiator is fairly new, but all the other parts look "original". I think that once I replace the water pump and T-stat it should solve my problems. I am still wanting to remove the clutch fan and install an electric, any hints on size, brand? FOr size should I just measure the height of the radiator and get the closest one to the demensions? ( 14", 16" ) I will probably wire the original fan back to its harness with a switch in paralell to kick it on when I am really in the thick stuff. Any other ideas are welcomed.

16" will only fit with a custom shroud. 14" will fit and if its the right CFM - nothing less then 2000 CFM will work.

With a gradual temp increase while idling, but ok otherwise, I'd look at the radiator first.
