I have a 2000 Alero GLS, the gas gauge is sporatic. Sometimes out of the blue while driving it would go all the way down to Empty, then slowly make it's way back to the true level. Could this be a fuse going bad?

Fuse no. Fuel level sensor yes. The level sensor is part of the fuel pump assembly.

Thanks, I don't suppose that is an easy DIY thing to change. Looks like the gas tank needs to be dropped in order to replace the fuel pump assembly?

No it is not. The fuel tank needs to be dropped. Can be done DIY. We have some old posts so do a search on gas or fuel tank, etc.

Here is an Alero fuel pump pod with the level sensor/float.
