Desperately need help with upper and lower BALL JOINT installation JIMMY92w 07-29-2006, 09:07 PM
1992 GMC Jimmy 4x4 I just replaced the stock upper ball joint with MOOG, and am currently removing the lower stock ball joint. I’ve used the pickle fork to separate the ball joint, and like the guide said when it releases it pops. This happened with no problem. Problem. I’ve installed the new ball joint but the rubber boot does not seem to completely seal around the tapered shaft. Question: How do I “POP” the ball joint back into place? Is this done by torque-ing up the nut the goes on the threaded portion of the ball joints tapered shaft? PLEASE HELP! jhong1226 07-29-2006, 09:14 PM Maybe some kind of a puller that will pull it in place? I know there is a ball joint puller but im not sure if you could use it to pull back into place a new one. JIMMY92w 07-30-2006, 01:57 AM PLEASE IGNORE MY FIRST POST. MY WORDING IS COMPLETELY OF BASE. What I meant to say is that that upper ball joint rubber does not seat flush with the control arm, it’s of at an angle touching at one side but up an 1/8 inch on the other. Is this normal? I had taken it back apart to evenly install the rubber and retainer, but as I put the spindle back through the control arm it did the same thing. Is there a special tool needed to reset the upper ball joint?
