99' GTP 96K

My car is leaking a dark liquid out of the center/passenger side of the car, and also has a burning smell when I drive it. The temp. is always well below the red line so the car isn't overheating....I'm thinking its burning off leaking Oil but the oil level seems to be just fine. I also checked the Trans. fluid level and it's also full. Any ideas on what I'm leaking and/or burning??

My car has been doing the same thing but i have a good idea what it is, just havent gotten time to get it taken care of. the rubber boot on the rack and pinion and the boot on the drive shaft is ripped and was leaking grease and that grease would end up on all the hot engine parts and would burn off, hence the smell. i got the drive shaft boot replaced on mine but the other one i still need replaced, then i need to get the engine cleaned. do you see any black grease anywhere around under your hood?

I just looked again...I see some black grease right below where the engine coolent is and it looks the same way under the car in the same area

yeah you might want to look at the drive axle and rack and pinion boots, they are rubber, they could be leaking that grease all over everything. if you look downwards by the front tires you should see one large and one small round "accordian" looking things, those are the boots, see if they have grease all over any of them, thats how it is on mine. i may stand corrected though, since thats the type of problems i had anyway.

I'll have to take a look at it tomorrow morning with some daylight. I couldn't get a good look last night with just a flashlight. My mom had to use it while her Civic is being looked at, so i wont see it again untill then. I'll post as soon as i can tell what the problem is. Thanks for the help mike.

does your a/c work? how about the heater? if not it could be your heater core broke and your leaking coolant.

I think my 'new' mazda toy has the same problem exept no burning smell. Engine looks all greasy and covered with about 1/10 inch thick black crap. Its not oil and it does not smell like oil. Does not affect performance, but engine looks like it is not drivable haha.

i had the same problem... I thought it was the heater core, but it ended up being the water pump... Listen to the engine and see if u hear anything... It's eaither the water pump or heater core... Fairly cheap to fix, but don't wait around too long. Also, when u stop at lights, or a drive through does the car temp climb considerably higher than while u are at cruising speeds? normal temp is right around the first line on the guage.
