The Mitsubishi is gone.

Not that that car was anything to write home (or on AF) about. (For those wondering, it was a Diamante LS.)

It served its purpose, and was a good family car, but with my new son (3rd), the car and our other SUV, an Isuzu Rodeo, just wasn't up to snuff, space-wise.

So the Mitsubishi got traded, and we now have this:

Date is off on the camera, so pay it no mind. This was taken a little over an hour ago, before the sun went down completely.

http://el3arb.com/DSCI0014.JPG

It's a 2005 Dodge Durango SLT AWD/4WD. It is in AWD mode in everyday driving, and you can lock it in 4WD if you go off-road, which I actually plan to do in the this, as soon as I can afford better tires, though I plan on using it for camping trails before then.

Next month, the Rodeo is going, and I get to pick a car for me...:evillol:.

you do know that by the end of the summer gasoline is supposed to be at a 4.00 A gallon average right? i hope you dont mind 100 dollars a week to keep that tank full, shit thats another car payment right there or your kids college fund.

Its a nice car man, but no offense, a really dumb buy. Does it alteast have the ability to turn off 4 of the cylinders to keep gas guzzling to a minimal?

But i understand where you are coming from, i come from a family of 5 as well, and we always had big cars to drive around in, even on long trips they seemed to small. But gas was only like 1 buck a gallon back then.

So...

...how's the wife and 3 kids fit in your family car bud? Oh they don't? Oh...you don't have a family?

Then shut the fuck up, because until then, you don't have the slightest fucking clue. You think I like not being able to buy an MR2 like I've always wanted? Being stuck with driving a boring Diamante sedan for this past year?

Think you can show me a sedan with three rows? Would YOU rather drive a mini-van instead?

Damn. You must have some big kids. LOL... j/k... I understand that it can be tight if you are in the vehicle along with your wife and 3 kids (child seats tend to take up a lot of space)...

I'm no fan of SUVs personally although I can see how they may be useful for big families that actuallly travel all together. When I was a kid, my family used a Chevy Astro and then a Ford 350 Van. Funny thing is by the time my Dad actually had money to buy those (used) 4 of the 5 kids had already moved away.

Anyway, it's nice to know that somebody that owns an SUV will actually be using it to it's full potential... ie. transporting more than one person.

I live in Arizona with 3 boys. I plan on going camping and off-roading with my sons. This is not going to happen with a mini-van. I don't care about 'image' as this is my wife's vehicle, essentially. SHE wanted the SUV. As I was telling the dealer: "The 3 rows is for her (sanity - keep the kids apart if necessary), and the 4WD is for me."

So...it hasn't been 24 hours yet. Should I turn to my wife and say: "Honey, I think we should get rid of this Durango you have always wanted, because clawhammer from Automotiveforums is of the opinion we should get a mini-van."?

Get the fuck out of here with your comments. Not only do we actually need the space, but I actually plan to use the vehicle to its full capacity as a 4WD vehicle.

I'll also worry about what I can or cannot pay, especially considering the SUV will not be driven too far, as I have already explained, even though I really didn't have to.

Get this into your thick skull: I WON'T BE COMMUTING IN THIS SUV. I am buying a cheaper, hopefully more economical car in a couple of weeks for MY longer commute.

Also, I'd like to see you try riding a motorcycle in 120 degree heat, which we already almost approached in Arizona, and will come even closer to next month.

Lastly, WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU AGAIN?

I have owned countless CARS in my lifetime, from most every major manufacturer, and my first SUV was the small-ish 4-cylinder Rodeo previously mentioned, when I had two sons. This will be my second SUV I have ever owned.

So, until you get to the point where I am in life with a house to deal with, 3 sons I would like to take on outdoor excursions, AT THE SAME TIME WITH GEAR, do NOT, I repeat, do NOT speak, as you have no fucking clue what you are dealing with, Dick.

Tell you what, I HATE SUV's too. Trust me. But to each situation his own. I don't care that clawhammer doesn't like SUV's, but for my purposes, I'd like to see him give me a good alternative.

Point is, he has NO CLUE. There are situations where someone had to get a unicycle too (for an extreme example), and I am not knocking the unicycle's purchase until I took the time to understand why it had be a unicyle.

If it was someone who is in the same familial situation as me, I'd listen better, as they'd be speaking from a position of experience. But not some snot who drives a car that is about as practical as women's shoes, and thinks he has an opinion on what MY FAMILY needs. Comprendé?

good buy for you. as i am another SUV hater. cant stand it when im in my car and cant turn onto the road or turn in the intersection since i cant see. i get what you mean about the whole 4x4 thing, u said your carrying 3 kids as well. thats not bad though. as long as it can change to 4 cyclender mode thing then id be pretty happy with the purchase. doesnt toyota have a hybrid highlander? i believe that has 3 rows as well. well, one of those damn suvs. and no, i havent riden in a suv. but from the white scranny guy from top gear said about the escalade "made me feel important. made me feel cool. made me feel so fumch better than the other people walking. if you had one of these, you could still be the coolest man on the block while living with your mom."

I may I put in my 2 cents.

What i don't like are SUVs that are driven just for the ego and not for a practical purpose. And my reason for not liking them because most of them put the rest of us in danger by bypasing all those state of the art crumple zones we have in out cars to protect our lives.

However that Durango you have is one of the few that are actually designed NOT to bypass the crumple zones of our cars which shows consideration. Plus as you mentioned you are actually using the durango to its intended purpose to carry people and their junk and offroading. So congrats on the car carrrnuttt.

It's a 4.7.

Now, buying the 'It's got a Hemi!' model, I can see objections to that one. Now THAT'S a waste. The 4.7 is peppy enough for the purposes of the vehicle. I am not wasting up-front, and insurance money to be able to say 'It's got a Hemi!' and be slightly faster. Why? This is one vehicle NOT meant for racing.

The new 287 is just that, new, sharing almost nothing but a heritage with the ol'reliables. For starters, it's the first true production Mopar V8 mill to incorporate aluminum cylinder heads ( okay, we know about the 1965 A-990 Hemi ) a plastic intake manifold, and magnesium valve covers. Nothing is re-hashed here, and the combustion chambers are almost hemispherical !

seems like a pretty good engine to me from reading that.

one thing i found curious was that the guy was saying the have gone away from forged steal rods to cracked powder rods, same as the ones in the 420a engine.... isnt that actually a step backwards? i know the rods in the 420a cant handle much more than 10psi.

I'm a little late on this one, but you're making some dumbass statements, man.

As far as SUV's go, the Durango is small. It's not much bigger than the average minivan and although it's no econobox, it'll do fine on gas. I for one am happy he didn't get a minivan, the Durango is kickass.

Also, driving a bike daily in this part of Az isn't a good idea. Reason 1; Phoenix is the most dangerous place in all of America to drive. People are killed on street bikes/bicycles on about a daily basis. The last thing you need to be on is a speck of metal with these idiots driving around. Wouldnt that just be great if he was killed on a bike and left behind his wife to fend for the kids alone.

Reason 2; It's about 5,000 degrees out for 5 months of the year. Every time you get off that thing you'll be absolutly drenched in sweat. Besides that, it's meserable to touch anything that's been sitting out in Summer sun for more than 5 minutes.

Interesting, as I read this thread I come to the conclusion that opinions don't matter or can't be said cause one can get bitched down by other posters. Let me explain something to you all, everyone has a right to an opinion here in AF. One may agree to it or not, but certainly it shouldn't be a basic for anyone (and I mean anyone) here to jump on the member for their comment especially when nothing wrong, derogatory or meanspirited was said.

Next one I see doing it will have to deal with me. Don't care who it is.
If it continues, I will close this thread.

Alot of unpopular opinions come through here and most are taken with a grain of salt, but when you've got someone ranting and lecturing to one of the more respected members of the forum it tends to make the rest a little irritated. He could have come across with his opinion in a much better fashion and he would have recieved a much better response. Instead it was "Your vehicle sucks because I think it wastes too much fuel, you don't need any of the features it offers and you're a selfish money wasting person for buying it."

This certainly isn't even close to the worst spat that gone on in this section of the forums and I really don't see why personel from the AF administration would bother to get upset about this. I'm not trying to challenge your administrative powers and decisions, but I don't see what the big deal about this particular post is.

I honestly think you should have gotten a mini-van. It can do everything for your family that the SUV can, except give you a manly image.
I think you need to think some more because the EPA rating for your S2000 is 20/26. His Durango gets 14/19.

Your car has only you in it most of the time while his SUV is going to have him and/or his wife and there 3 kids in it most of the time. His SUV is going to be using less gas per person then your car does.

You brought up minivans so lets see a Honda Odyssey gets 20/28 so if the had got a minivan he would be getting about 7.5 mpg more.

Now I’m going to bring up the Honda Civic which gets 30/38 so if you traded in your S2000 for a Civic you would be getting about 11 mpg more.

People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Congrats on the purchase.

I'm not an SUV person, just my choice, and it has nothing to do with those tree hunging hippy fruitcakes and their damned "YOUR GIVING MONEY TO TERRORISTS!!!" and "SAVE THE EARTH FROM GLOBAL WARMING THAT HAS NO PROOF OF EXISTANCE!!!" or any of that shit. Fuck hippys.

However, after driving a number of H3s, Tahoes, Durangos, F-150s, a number of types of Jeeps, and other SUVs for work, I can definately see why people like them. Shit, that Tahoe was like driving a nimble tank, and even though the H3 is the smallest of the Hummers, you still feel so damned safe in it. I wouldn't buy one, but I really see why people like them, especially people who actually need them, like carrrnuttt here.
