Swap to a ZQ8 steering boxjdmccright 07-08-2006, 12:26 PM I've heard of this swap out to get a quicker steering ratio, but my question is is it a straight bolt-on swap or do I need to do any "adjustments"? What part should I ask for at the parts store? Any help would be appreciated! jdmccright 07-28-2006, 02:06 PM I haven't heard a response, so I'm reposting to try and get a quick answer from anyone who may know. I'd like to do the ZQ8 steering box swap, but want to know the correct part #, and also anything else I need to do to it to make it fit my '96 4wd. Thanks! blazes9395 07-29-2006, 12:09 AM I don't know part number, just go to a dealer for that, or someone else may be able to help you on that. If your is 4x4(which it looks like it is), you need to change the pitman arm, and it should work from there, bolt right up.. jdmccright 07-29-2006, 02:38 PM If I have to change the pitman arm, wouldn't I need to change out the idler arm too to keep the same geometry? rlith 07-30-2006, 10:29 AM I have a zq8 box...Only have to change the pitman arm and get an alignment... That's it... Direct bolt in.. sirul 08-01-2006, 01:42 PM I have a zq8 box...Only have to change the pitman arm and get an alignment... That's it... Direct bolt in.. I had and issue with "steering Slope" (there was excesive play in the steering). I replace my steering box with a ZQ8, it bolted right on, no modifications. Replaced the pitman arm (put a new one, about $60) no need an idler arm unless is really loose and that is it. After that all you need is an alignment and you will have a really nice steering response. BTW, I reccomed to replace the Intermediate shaft as long as you are there. Is got that "Rag Join" that comes loose after a few years and gives you a slope steering. I found both in e-bay at a very good price. This guy sells only blazer and Jimmy parts from newer trucks (1998-2006). Check it out, do a search for seller "s10warehouse" very recommended !! parts come from Florida, no rust and look like new!!!. :2cents: rlith 08-01-2006, 01:56 PM Or do what I did and completely eliminate the rag joint all together and go with a grand jeep cherokee shaft (u-jointed) jdmccright 08-08-2006, 03:23 PM Great, though I might change the idler out anyways. And I tried to get a u-joint intermediate shaft once before but was given the wrong part. When I find the time, I'm going to attempt to replace the worn out rubber piece with a custom-made, stiffer, polyurethane one. If that doesn't work, then I'll probably pursue the GC u-joint conversion again. Thanks for the info! vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
