my geo prizm will not start when i turn the key every now and then. it eventually starts as i continue the key on/off cycle. the problem is intermittent and didn't happen when i put it in for service. I replaced the starter and put in a new ignition tumbler with a new key but the problem still occasionally happens. The car is used mainly by my son so i don't want him to get stuck anywhere. ANy ideas on where else to check?

I had a similar problem on my 90 prism, I had a used ign. swich on a colum, so I installed it. my problem was solved but not sure what a parts house would charge. Not sure if thats your promblem but may want to look into it

Does the starter solenoid click?

I had the same problem on my 95 Prizm before I removed the starter. I ended up having a loose connection.

Clean the starter’s connections.

Also if its a manual, make sure the switch that is pressed in by the clutch is still working or being pressed in all the way...a floor mat for example may be in the way.

Best of luck to you :)

The Most Common Problem With The 1.8l Przm Is The Starter Itself, Or The Electrical Contacts Within The Internal Solenoid Circuit. Either Way The Starter Must Removed And Bench Tested

I thought that at first, but they said the starter was new, so I leaned towards a bad clutch switch or loose connection.

If the contacts are the suspect it can be fixed for under $10 with simple hand tools...
