I found this incredbiley nice 86 Trans Am GTA on the side of the road.

I stopped to look (in my caprice XD) its got a new Cowl hood and quarter panels alos their primered, and all the paint has been sanded, and a few spots look like its been repaired with bondo and had primer put over it (in common rot spots)

I pushed on the hood and tail end to test the suspension, its very stiff.

The guy is asking 1200$ for it, and the interior is in nice shape.

The sign says it has a "recently" rebuilt 350, and a rebuilt "over stock" 700r4 trans with less than 500 miles on it. What ever overstock means. with some various performance upgrades.

Is this guy kidding? 1200$ for it resonable?

Any input is welcomed/wanted lol. If its a nice asking price I might buy it.

Little weekend end warrior fun ;)

I would find out how many miles are on the body/engine/tranny and also talk to the guy see if you can drive it around a little to see how it runs and rides and if it's nice heck yeah, buy it up. I don't think it's an outragous price.

i looked in the cab, and the odo said a little over 7,000 miles.

It has the 6 digit odo, so it could be 107,000 or maybe he had it rolled over to 0 when the engine was rebuilt, idk. ill found out tomorrow, and post it

If I buy it, i might keep the body the way it is, little sleeper action(if the 350 is built enouugh) or mabe paint it that hot rod primer black, lol

I'd take a magnet and see how much bondo is actually in it.

And for true sleeper action, your going to need something more than a typical "built" 350.

Will a magnet not stick to bondo?

Bondo is not metal so no a magnet will not stick to bondo. Sounds like it's been hit in the front. Check the front end very well make sure it ain't bent to shit. Cause if it's been hit and the frame is messed up you will never get that car aligned properly.

And if it has a 6 digit odometer then it should show if it has 107,000 (that's 6 digits) and if it only has 7,000 mile and it has been rebuilt the guy is either a liar or a moron. Either way walk away from it... Figure out what is up with the milage, and I don't think it's legal to mess with the odometer even if you do rebuild the engine.

What're you talking about? If its the 350 that came in that model T/A then its around 200-250ish HP.. thats good enough and the TPI can become a true monster.

From what it sounds like, unless there's any real structure problem with it, i'd take it. 1200 sounds like a steal, if he isnt lying about anything and it runs.

thats what Im saying, Im actually gettinf ready to go back to the car and call te guy to see if he can meet me up there.

Ill post later today whats up with it.

CamrosrSweet: ill ask wether it got hit or not, I think he just put a new hood on, cause the cowl hoods didnt come on these, they had some dumb vents in their hood.

edit!: I looked at it, and called thr guy no answer yet. But it says its a 1985 trans am GTA. but wasnt the gta started in 87? hmmm, and it has a 5 digit odo(my bad)

Is there any way I can tell If the frame is bent by looking at it?

I thought it might have been hit because he replaced the hood and the quarter panels at the same time (probably). Check the holes in the frame to see if they've been pulled on, also check to see if the frame has been painted recently. I don't know about you but I would make this guy thouroughly convince me that this car is in good condition. There are just too many things thhat are funky about this deal...

Im meeting him on wedsnaday to look at the car better, and test drive, also I told him to bring what ever records he has saying the trans is re built and engine.

Well see what happens.

Maybe he put A GTA engine in it? Ill find out.

I'd walk away from it myself from what you've said about it. It's no way a true GTA if it is a '85 car.

On a different note, I found a complete, drivable '86 TA in a boneyard. The car is REAL solid especially for an Ohio car. It's loaded with t-tops and still has the bags for them!!! It's even a 5sp car. I tried to buy the whole car but the owner said he couldn't because someone had cut out the VIN tag out of the dash. I looked at it, and sure enough, there's a big hole in the corner of the windshield and the VIN plate is missing. What a shame! I'm thinking of buying most of the car though and selling what I don't need on Ebay.

I would do the magnet thing and look to see if it was in a wreck by looking nder the hood like everyone else said and then crawl under the car and look for any signs of heavy rust damage. For 1200 if it does indeed have a rebuilt trans and motor and it runs and you have a place to park it if it turns out to be a pile of crap.....id do it...

I looked at the car today in better light and the bondo is in three spots on the driver side, and there each no bigger then a bout a inch in diameter.

Im meeting him weds and all questions will be answered.

I did talk to him today, and I asked bout the front end, and it was in a wreck a year ago, but it wasnt even anything major, little michigan winter, and a RWD car dont like turns very well.

if he lets me buy it, and my moms head doesnt turn all gray, ill put it in my garage.
