hey guys, you all seem to be the most knowledgeble camaro people on the net, so i figured i'd come to you guys.

when i got 1996 camaro 3800 v6 almost a year back, there was a problem with downshifting and accelerating. turns out the problem is a loosened detent/TV cable which was done intentionally, by order of my dad, by the mechanic we bought it from. he told me recently thats what was done, and that if i can fix it go ahead. so heres the question, how to i get the to cable thats hooked to the tranny, cuz its not the one on top of the engine.

Why the heck did your dad have the mechanic loosen it in the first place?

"prevent me from speeding" were his words. i cant downshift from 2nd to 1st automatically, i gotta do it by actually shifting from d to 1. also i can feel my passing gear isnt as good as it should be, since it wont kick down as hard due to the cable. (i blew a motor in my achieva, so he doesnt trust me much anymore. but he bought me a camaro, go figure.)

Well, If my dad had done that i would chew him a new asshole. By doing something like that he made the car more dangerous because when you need it you don't have to ability to speed up quickly if you needed to. Not to mention the fact that this has probably done damage to the car by forcing you to downshift it manually. I would tell your dad to take it back to the mechanic and have him fix it since he was the one who had it done in the first place.

ive already got a mechanic, who also happens to be a good friend, lined up, but instead of buying the book since hes not exactly sure where it is, i was wondering if any of you guys knew how to get to it.

That vehicle should have a 4L60-E and those don't have a detent cable or a T.V. cable. Everything is controlled by the PCM. You sure he didn't put a governor on it?

are you 100% positive about that, cuz damn that changes things. i was told that the cable connecting throttle to transmission was loosened. maybe its a different name but i dont think so. im pretty sure a governor wasnt involved, but it could be, im gonna call the mechanic who sold the car to me tomorrow and find out the real deal. if what you say is true, then thank u very much for clearing things up.

also, if it is controlled electronically, what can be done to change it back to normal?

I am 100% positive it has no t.V. cable or detent cable. That car came from the factory with a 4L60-E and it is electronically controlled. So unless someone has done some monkeying around and swapped in a different trans, ie.. TH-350,TH-400 or a 700-R4 there is absolutely no way there should be a cable for the trans. They only cables you should have connected to the throttle body are the throttle cable and if equipped with crusie the cruise control cable. If you do have the original trans in that car and someone is telling you it has a cable, RUN. (sorry, not to offend if they are a friend)

Ok, so since it is an electronically controlled transmission the mechanic had to have messed with the programming in order to change that. So either you need to reprogram it back to the way it is supposed to be or it is also possible that the mechaninc did nothing and the car just has mechanical issues with the transmission. I do not even know if it is possible to change that in the programming, that is why I said take it back to the ORIGINAL mechanic and have him undo whatever he did, because he know what he did and how to fix it.
