I just recently purchased a 98 E250 ......

At around 40-40 I get a slight shudder .......

Are there any known fixes for this other then a new transmission..... ?

it has approx 140,000 miles......

thank you

It depends on which transmission you have, and I would bet it is the 4R100 (E4OD) HD one that there is no real fix for.

The 4R70W is known for developing shudder due to the "constant slip" torque converter design (Ok, it is not really designed for it, but Ford does it anyway). These units are generally fixed with fresh Mercon V fluid.

However, you CANNOT (must NOT) use Mercon V ATF in a 4R100 trans or it will die.

I would guess that you may be feeling an engine misfire moreso than "shudder". Shudder feels EXACTLY like driving over "rumble strips", while a misfire feels more like a "tugging", slower than the "rumble strip" feel.

Generally a new set of wires and plugs will fix a misfire.
