Now that exams are over I have time to post again. This is a prismacolor marker and colored pencil rendering of a bodykit design i did. My aim was something extreme and very wide, but still tasteful. Hope you like it.

I love the coloring, but the car is a bit hunched over.

overall, I like it.

I think hes JUST practicing the bodykit design....which is great by the way, not too busy. Keep them coming.

Cheers, Rob.

Maybe you're comparint this freehand one to one of his grid-based renderings. I think for the fact that this one is freehand it is good.

Yeah Alex what shall I say... colors are perfect, you really profit from the renderings you're doing. The perspective/dimensions seem wrong... the car is too long and therefore looks like a sedan.

Anyways, the bodykit design is great. It's agressive, not overdone and totally fits to the Skylines design.

I think you have become too dependent on the grid. You cant freehand very accurately at all :(

Kit design and color all look great though!

actually I think Alex's "free" work has consistently improved. Every piece is not going to be your greatest, but I can see spots where he has gotten much better in this work. Adding a few spots for depth in the kit on the side should help recess the door and then it will probably straighten out just fine.

The path to improvement is not a straight shot. You go up and down. You take what works for you and apply it to the next one.

If you go back a year or so and look at his free work you will see drastic improvement. Yeah this one has a funky little twist but that does not mean he can't do it. I would put his rendering skills even in this piece up against any on this board, and also lets not forget the big thing....

If I'm not mistaken he is 15 years old...15!

In a few years time we'll all be talking about how we used to know him. I see great fire and determination in his growth path. He's going to be one of the great ones (I've told him that before). This is a small piece in a great puzzle. Keep goin dude.

Re: Lemorris' comments: "Amen, Brother." It is a series of ups & downs, and Alex has what many of us wish we had at his (or any) age. Roboduck

Thanks for the advice and comments everybody.

As for the drawing, it's far from perfect... I won't argue with any of your comments. This drawing was concentrated more on the rendering and design aspects, but I really should have paid more attention to proportions, since they are just as important. I'm working hard to improve my freehand skills, not just with cars but with different subjects and mediums.

Lemorris: that's really inspiring. I appreciate it!

I thought all Alex's work was freehand..??

this is why i always say that its wrong to trace or use grids... you may save time (not too much actually) but you lose the expierence you could have gained. If you know what im trying to say.

In case you are afraid that the outlines will not be clean, try drawing it a couple of times on another piece of paper, and then simly trace the clean lines of YOUR drawing onto another piece. Thats what I do sometimes, when it comes to bikes and cars.

no sweat Alex

you inspire me

all of this is a matter of practice

the lessons you learn from your grid drawings will work their way into your non-grid stuff, you'll see. Keep doing everything you're doing. You're about to turn a corner...I can see it.

Drawing with tools is how Foose, Taylor, Tedder, Sanford etc learned. It's in their books. The grid is a tool just like an eraser is a tool. Tracing is a viable and recognized illustration method. Like Bonzelite says: If you lack drawing skills you can't trace well either.

Internal art pursuit is not a competitive thing. Watch and see how good this kid gets. It's going to be amazing.

Lemorris: thanks buddy! Drawing tools are very helpful, but it's important that I learn to work without them as well.

Sieg: Thanks. I have tried using the transfer method a few times. it does help clean up lines and refine little details.

the color is amazing! I think i like it kinda twisted like that cuz it gives it a kind of "toon" look. good stuff.

Nice work Alex, bodykit design looks sick but looks a bit busy in the front and dilutes to the back, try to balance design focusing on realistic elements, such as where each vent lead and what it will serve also aerodynamics is a major one...as for the pencil render its awesome! keep up the standard.

hey alex,

very nice rendering!! that the perspective is not perfect was allready told. For the rest I didnt read everything the people said, but I saw one thing which I also am fighting with most times if I design a bodykit...At the side, the wider part is going very strange.
Im busy now for a dutch design contest and I also have problems like that sometimes...it all have to be integrated perfectly. Well...i try to haha...when its finished i'll show it on the forum...
What is ur next project? I'd like to see some new work of you...cant have enough of it haha..well..good luck with drawing and stuff

i agree with venom, but i don't think the problem is with the transition, but with the shading. because of the shading, the angle of the fender seems to change somehow.

It is a good drawing but I think the bodywork is too overdone.
