Why a catback?

Hey, Just wondering why everyone goes with a catback system instead of just replaceing the muffler. Would the gains be about the same? I'm looking at this way because It would be much cheaper and I don't want to buy a catback just to change exhaust nextyear to true duals. Also I was wondering, if I was to take out my stock muffler, cut everything out of it and put it back in, does it sound good? I want something louder than stock but I like the stock look. Also would I get any performance gains from this and would they be similar to a catback system? I've considered a cutout but I prefer to see my exhaust coming out of both rear tips on cool days.
Thanks, Beene

Put a cut out in after the cats. If you want stock look and louder that'll help in that department. Also you'll spend 70 bucks Max untill you do true duals next year. People usually get a cat back becuase it flows better. Dont gut the muffler you'll be driving around sounding raspy as hell.

I just got long tube headers. 3 inch y pipe then 3in to a magnaflow. I will post pics of what it looks like when I get home from work in the morning if I am not to tired.
The main thing like viper said is a cat back eliminates the stock 2.5 or 2.25 in pipe after the cats and get a 3 in for better flow...If you go with a exhaust with magnaflow they flow great and have good sound when you get on it but nice and mellow at idle or putting around.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do...
