Need help with firing order

Hey everyone, I just bought a '91 Firebird with a 3.1L v6 in it from my roomate, who tried to change the spark plugs, took all the wires off, and put them back wrong. I need to find out what the firing order is supposed to be, which terminal of the distributor cap is #1, & whether or not this would cause there to be gasoline smell on the new plugs? A gasoline smell could be from that cylinder not firing or from a rich condition,

Oh yeah...
and which cylinder is #1? and what order (in the engine) are they in, do you happen to know?

After quite a few frustrating hours under the hood today, I think I've got the firing order problem situated. The bad news is that now I'm realizing that this is only a small part of the problem.
Since you all are obviously better educated about the Firebird than a simple backyard mechanic (me), allow me to ask for a bit more advice:

The car will start for a couple seconds, but then it dies immediately, as if it wasn't getting any gas, except I smell the gasoline after it starts & dies. By this time my battery is almost dead, so it's on a charger, but I've tried giving it gas, not giving it gas, turning the distributor, and the fuel pump is A-OK:(
One strange thing, the new spark plugs that were in it now are very black at the contact point, seem to be coated with carbon deposits, yet the car hasn't been running since my roomate changed the plugs, just been trying to start it unsuccessfully. I can tell the plugs are new by the wire end, or else I would think I was being bullshitted.
Anyone have any suggestions, I don't want to spend a heap of cash replacing parts on a trial & error basis, I need some informed guesses, things that happen more often in Firebirds, etc. because I know the list of possibilities is long.
