What happened to my power window?

I have a 96 Chevy Camaro. Something was wrong with the poewr window recently. The power window only works for about 3 seconds then it will stop. If I wait for a while, it will work for another 2 or 3 seconds, then stop.

Does anyone know what happened?

Thanks for any replies.

Basically, your power window motor is burned out. You're going to have to get it replaced. I would always suggest doing it yourself that way you'll save yourself an arm and a leg.

Here's some instructions on how to do it.

Hi,

What do you mean? No motor problem?

No.. changing the old and broken one to a newer working one is a bitch of a job itself to do.. You'll see what I mean when you get to working on it.

The biggest pain in the butt part is knocking out the old rivets. Its not so bad once you get into it though. It looks harder than it is..

They (both sides) went really easy for me the hardest part was putting back on the door pannels and making sure not to get my fingers chopped off.

Can you let me know what's the important thing to keep in mind when I try to remove the rivets?

I need two drilling heads, one for the hole to get the rivet exposed, the other for the rivet itself? What kind of tools did you use? :nono:

Thank you!

Get and read a Chilton's manual for the car and the online instructions as well. The most important thing to do is make sure you immobilize the regulator (metal levers and spring that help the motor lift the window). The spring in there is under a lot of tension and can be very dangerous and could injure you very badly if you are not careful. I never had a problem drilling out the rivets that was easy, but you will need to find nuts and bolts to replace the rivets. Good luck

Hi CamaroRsweet94,

Thanks for your warning. I will keep that in mind.

I ordered the part from ebay, and will put it on sometime next week. I'm going to let you guys know the result.

Have a nice weekend!

I am curious as to the outcome of your problem with the intermittent power up issue with your Camaro. Did you get it all to work. I have the exact same problem with mine. I just ordered the third window motor for this thing. I have changed them about once every 3 years. I have checked other sites and they have said something about frayed wiring being the culprit as well. I am going to really look into the wiring end of things on mine to verify that the wiring is not the problem. This time I am also spending extra on the motor to get a lifetime warranty with it.

I have to say that the window motor problem is the only real problem I have had with this car. I've put 225,000 miles on it so far (yes only one motor, never opened) and have done all of the basic preventative maintenance on it along the way. I change the oil every 7,500-10,000miles. I am not an 'easy driver' on it. The worst problem I have ever had with it was the clutch. That went at about 90,000.

Replacing the rivets was really the hardest part because its a tight fit and all..

Taking em out was simple though.

Hi Jimponder,

Thanks for sharing your experience on the power window motor!

I haven't done that yet. I will probably find some time next weekend. It seems the parts you ordered wasn't very good. BTW, where did you buy the first two motors? I ordered one from Ebay it's only $25. Hope that will not turn out to be a shitty one. Those from Autozone is about $60. Are they going to be better?

I would go buy one from Advance, and get one with a warranty that way if it goes bad you can get another one.

Funny you should mention Autozone. I got one of those motors from them and the other from Advance Auto. I have also just ordered my ebay $25 motor. I pulled the door panel off today to find that the bolts holding the motor on weren't tightened all the way down. I am wondering if this also had something to do with the problem. I greased the hell out of everything last week to see if it would help but it didn't. I checked wiring and that all looks fine, so I am writing it off as a bad motor. If it wasn't raining today, I was going to put it in after work. Maybe tomorrow. I will let you know what I find out. ALSO: If you are using nuts and bolts to replace the rivets, get some wide washers and some lock washers to help keep those bolts in place.

I just replaced the old motor. Even more funny, I did not need to drill off the rivets at all, because they are all bolts. And the motor is branded with 'NAPA'.

I find the web link is really helpful. The whole process isn't hard but really need your patience.

Funny you should say NAPA. The bad one I just took out was from NAPA. I put the new one in and everything is working perfectly. I am going to bring the NAPA Remanu. motor back to them to see if it is still under warranty. If it is, I will take the 'new' one and save it for the passenger side for when that one breaks. I must say the motor I got from ebay for 15 bucks works a hell of lot better than the NAPA Crappa.
