ABS Comes on at 70 MPH - 98 windstarBildo 06-19-2006, 12:52 PM My abs light comes on around 70 MPH. There is a tapping sound coming from the front, I thought it might be a loose heat shield but cannot find one. I also have some vibration and a high pitch noise coming from my driver side rear. I know its allot but maybe someone has some advise. Mama's T-Bird 06-20-2006, 04:08 PM My 97 Windstar did the same thing concerning ABS. My mechanic read the codes and determined which wheel was the culprit, but he never fixed it. I took all the wheels and hubs off one at a time and cleaned the abs sensor and everything else with brake cleaner. The cure lasted about 3 months. I bought the sensor from Rockauto.com and installed it and cured the problem. The bad sensor had a stripped bolt head (8-mm), and it took me 7 hours (yes, 7 hours), of applying WD-40, BP-blaster, torch, etc., but nothing worked. Eventually, had to drill out old bolt that held the sensor (it had rusted into the framing), and put in a new bigger bolt with lock washer and nut, but it worked. I noticed that sometimes the sensor is too close to the gear and rubs against it (causing ABS to come on), and sometimes sensor is too far away from the gear-causing ABS to come on. Sorry, but this is very bad engineering on Ford's part, but what else is new? phil-l 06-20-2006, 04:13 PM The sensor is sometimes too far away, and sometimes too close - on the same wheel? If so, I'd guess the bearings on that wheel are shot... DRW1000 06-20-2006, 05:02 PM The sensor is sometimes too far away, and sometimes too close - on the same wheel? If so, I'd guess the bearings on that wheel are shot... I wondered about that too. Could the toothed ring be installed at an angle? Mama's T-Bird 06-20-2006, 07:06 PM No- I meant the sensors were too close or too far away on different wheels. Sorry vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
