The 86 has been running since Nov. of 2005 when it got a new battery, fuel pump, filter and catalytic converter and 114,000 miles. I have around 5000 miles on it since sitting for 2 years in my grandfathers garage. New plugs were installed 750 miles ago with no problems.

Problem: Last Monday the car would start in the morning (summer 55 degrees) then die. After 3 or 4 starts it took off for a 70 mile round trip to work. Tuesday morning the same thing but worse, the car actually died on the road about half mile for the house after 3 or 4 re-starts. Wednesday, the car would not stay running. It would immediately die after start. It was towed to the shop, where it got a new distributor, rotor, and module. I picked it up at 5 p.m. and drove around 40 miles with no problems. Thursday, would start and then die. After 4 or 5 re-starts I drove it to work 30 miles. At lunch, it started and died 4 times and then ran and drove it around town with no more problems. Going home, it ran after 4 re-starts and I drove home 30 miles. We checked the throttle position sensor and cleaned it. Today, after setting for 3 days it will start and die. I removed the vacuum from the EGR and still same. So, in short it has new: fuel pump, catalytic converter, fuel filter, spark plugs, air filter, PVC, breather filter, distributor cap, rotor, and module (u-shape in distributor) and 114,000 miles. Any thoughts on why it will not start and stay running until warm?

Im not a mechanic. But I would think there might be a huge vaccum leak, or some leak from a gasket/seal and when it heats up it may expand to stop the leak enough for the engine to run.

Idk really, thats my guess.

I had a problem similar to that in my current car a couple of years ago. It was the carburetor (the M/C solenoid was shot, the air bleeds were plugged, the float sunk, gaskets were shot). I rebuilt it, replacing the float and M/C solenoid and problem solved.

Nevermind, you have the TBI - I suppose I should read before I reply next time... LOL...

Check the injectors and make sure there are no vacuum leaks anywhere (check the manifold-to-throttle body gasket and the IAC solenoid, as well as all hoses big and small).

Root Cause was the fuel pump? I took the car to a friend-of-a-friend that owns a repair garage. The fuel pump was replaced and the car is on the road again. I can only assume that the fuel pump in Nov. 2005 was bad, or that I was ripped off for a part that was not installed! Thanks for the post, and I enjoy reading the Caprice forum.
