305 power! need a little adviceMrBrown 06-18-2006, 01:56 AM I have an 84 caprice classic w/ the rochester. If i got a cam cam that had .438"/.452" of lift with 208/214 degrees of duration would i have problems with the computer or carb? I know I'd have to swap out the metering rods. I was planning on buying this cam with roller rockers, beehive valvesprings and a performer intake. This cam is made bycrane and is said to be emissions legal. Any tips or advice would be just swell! silicon212 06-18-2006, 04:25 AM I have an 84 caprice classic w/ the rochester. I'm running that very cam and it gets along with the computer just fine (in fact, they used to be called "CompuCams" by Crane many years ago). As for the carb, the one I'm using now is off a *305*, with the air valve readjusted to my 350 - and it has the factory metering rods and works great. The cam makes gobs of torque. I dunno about beehive valvesprings - I'm running a set of COMP single coil springs that have 256k miles on them now, along with an equally aged set of COMP Magnum roller-tip chromemoly rockers. This, along with other things I've done to the engine enable it to produce around 320HP (275 on stock exhaust). Of course this is a 350, so don't expect that power out of a 305, but it certainly will help a 305 and when used in conjunction with a TH700R4 transmission, should produce a good bit of "get up and go" torque. MrBrown 06-19-2006, 12:01 AM silicon212, you have made my day! that is just what I would love to here after such a crappy day! This cam sounds perfect for my car! It definitely needs all the torque it can get. I think I have to rebuild the tranny soon in it though. The torque converter doesn't seem to be working real well and its starting to slip just a tad. I plan on getting the transgo shift kit and maybe one of those saturday night special converters along with stronger bands and an extra clutch pack in the trans. Out of curiosity, what heads and intake are you running? Also back to the cam, do I need special pushrods for it? Thankyou for all the help. I say you are the caprice god! silicon212 06-19-2006, 03:00 AM The intake will work with yours, it's an Edelbrock #3701 Performer EGR. The heads won't however - they're #3991492 327 heads (64cc chamber, 1.94/1.5 valves) and won't work on a 305. You don't need special pushrods, but they're cheap so it would be a good idea to replace them. Do NOT EVEN THINK about reusing your old lifters - buy new ones - if you reuse your old ones, your cam will probably not make it past 5,000 miles (that's five thousand), and that's being liberal. A stage-1 equivalent kit from TransGo is all you need, but rebuild your transmission too. Don't just throw the kit on there or it will hasten your transmission's demise if it's already slipping. Don't worry about a high-stall converter either; keep it stock. MrBrown 06-19-2006, 04:01 PM thanks a lot silicon! I have to wait another week before I order my parts so my paycheck can clear. I've already talked to a mechanic who I personally know that will do the work right. He said it should cost around $100 to $250 depending on how long it will take. I'm also getteing long tube headers for it, along with other misc. stuff,(i.e. spark plugs, wires, ETC.) and then have it dump out before the back tire. MrBrown 06-19-2006, 04:15 PM one more question, do i have flat tappet hydraulic lifters or hydraulic rollers? silicon212 06-19-2006, 04:52 PM Flat tappets - rollers made their debut in the Caprice in 1987. MrBrown 06-20-2006, 01:16 AM Thats good. That saves me a bunch of money. New roller lifters are like $200. MrBrown 06-20-2006, 01:31 AM what is that part number for your valvesprings and did you get them from a place like summit or jegs? silicon212 06-20-2006, 01:49 AM what is that part number for your valvesprings and did you get them from a place like summit or jegs? I got them at Loper's, a place here in Arizona. I can't remember what the part number was for them since it has been 13 years since I got them. They were the COMP (then Competition Cams) "pacalloy" springs. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
