Hi everyone. I have a problem with my firebird. I try to start it but it (the starter) keeps turning. I leave it there for a day and the battery dies. I found out that my firebird is a 91 (for the longest time i thought it was a 92). I took the altenator in to kragens and they said it worked fine after they tested it. Im not sure if the altenators for a 91 and 92 are diffrent. anyways i think it might be the starter thats bad or the altenator. I cant start my car. :-(

I'd like to know what some of you guys think is wrong please

Thank you

does the starter wine then start clicking if so have you checked the battery? try jump starting your car; if its not the battery let me know and ill think of something else doesnt sound like the starter is the problem though since it whines

What exactly do you mean you try and turn the starter and it keeps turning? Do you mean that when you engage the starter it keeps cranking even when youre not turning the key until it is dead? Or do you mean you crank it and it only turns over but wont start and then the next day it is dead?

okay what i mean is you turn the key and the start works but the car doesnt turn over and then the starter just dies (when it dies it probally makes a clicking noise) just try to jump start your car if that works then its your battery

I put the ca on a battery charger. This thing jump starts cars. When i turn the key. The starter whines and keeps whinning. Its like the engine just doesnt want to start. I was thinking that it could be the fuel pump but when i turn the key and i had someone stick thier ear on the gas tank (Where you insert the nozle for gas) they hear the fuel pump click(I guess that means its working).

The car does charge up and it will stay that way for a day or two until the battery dies again. Maybe i dont have the right size battery?

Ill take some pictures of the engine and battery and have them here soon.

The fuel pump should make a pretty prominant whining or whirring sound for like 5 seconds when your first turn the key to the on position before you even start cranking it. If you have to huddle on the ground near the tank to hear a faint click, then it sounds like the pump isnt engaging. Could be a relay, bad pump, or other similar issue keeping the pump from delivering fuel. Try and get a fuel pressure gauge on there and see if you have pressure at the fuel rail and if so what it is while cranking/with the key on.

I heard that prominant noise when we turned the key today. It was a whirring souds and it did like about 5 seconds. So does this mean that my pump is ok?

That shows that it is coming on...it may still eb weak though. You need about 35-40 psi of pressure I believe to fire the fuel injectors. Try and get that fuel pressure reading. Maybe try replacing the fuel filter if you havent already. Good to do anyway if it hasnt been done. If you have good fuel pressure and the battery is good or has a charger on it, then you might have a spark problem. Check the pressure first. Then let us know what you found.

when you say you hear a whirring, is it the ENGINE turning over.. or only the starter spinning? if its only the starter ,its not engaging the motor.. and you should have a fuel pressure gauge reader nipple thing..if you press it, does gas shoot out? (That prolly means gas is alright)..it should start, even for a little if it has a little pressure.. (enough to spray gas out)..then the only two things that can be wrong are..

1) spark
2) fuel injectors..

if you have a spare injector, hook it up..and see if it clicks..OR unscrew a spark plug, see if you smell gas from the inside of the cylinder.. if you do..
its your spark. (to check, get a really good welfding glove.. hold a spare spark plug in the plug wire, if the sparks not BLUEish.. (if its yellow or orange) or if you dont get a spark at all..thats prolly your problem!
