Hi, I'm having some probelems just getting my 94 Explorer in gear. It's an automatic, and it'll sometimes get up to 4000 RPM's, I'll have to let off the gas, and if it doesn't shift up, I have to repeat the process. It also is a gutless wonder. It's got a small accelerator pedal, and for some reason, it takes forever to get going and if I push down TOO far then it'll rev up, but literally slow down. I can barely go on the highways, living in Iowa, because of all the hills. By the time I get to the top of the hill I'm going 45 in a 65. Some friends have told me that one of the problems might be the oxygen sensors, but they're 75 bucks a piece. And for something that MIGHT be the oxygen sensors, I dont want to pay $150 and still have my problem. My last problem is the brakes, they were squeeking so I went to the parts store and bought some of the goo stuff to rub on the brakes.. but when I jacked it up, took the tire off and started looking at the brake pads, I noticed that they were touching the disks. As far as I know, they arn't supposed to touch the disks until you pushed down on the break, but I dont know if this is something specifically that Ford did or not. It's like that on both of the front tires, and I think that this might be a cause of some bad gas mileage?

Thanks to anyone that can help with these problems.

What engine and trans do you have? What is the mileage?

When you start the truck up does it idle okay. around 1000 rpms?

What exactly happens when you put it in Drive?

Some basics are check for proper fuel pressure. Fuel filter could be clogged.
Tune up spark plugs, wires and air filter.

Trans probably needs a fluid filter change. Don't do the tranny flush if you have high milage. It will kill your trans.

Have a "Professional auto shop" scan for codes and then worry about any sensor replacement. Otherwise you will waste a lot of $ on what you don't need.

Take the brakes to a auto shop for inspection.

4.0 liter V6, 141k miles. The engine was just replaced like a week ago.

When it first starts.. it's pretty shakey. At stoplights and stopsigns, after it's been running for a few minutes it'll be ok though. If I rev it up a bit before I put it in drive, it wont die, but otherwise, yeah, it'll die. I have to put on the gas really slowly so it doesn't die.

Taking it in to a shop tomorrow to scan for the codes and at the same time get the brakes looked at. As for Plugs/Wires/Air Filter.. I'm almost positive that they're all good still.

EDIT: The Transmission fluid is still red, too.

One thing on that controls the idle, is the IAC - idle air control motor.

Post back what you find out from the auto shop.

I went to a place that mainly deals with Transmissions, and the did a Diagnostic test. They said that there were some cables that weren't hooked up or something and that the scanning for the codes did nothing, they suggested that it was probably when I put in the other engine that the mechanic didn't hook everything up. They said that there was some parts that they needed to buy and that they'd look for them Monday and see what they could find. They said that the Oxygen Sensors were PROBABLY the problem, so I called my brother and have him pick 2 up. I took it to a different place where a fried works at only to find that the Oxygen Sensors that are already in there are like.. Melted in or something, so they told me to take it to an Exhaust Pro shop to have them get the sensors out.

I just dont know what to do.
