Tbi to carb question ?fuzzypuppy 06-08-2006, 06:11 PM Ok, I have searched past messages for this but no luck, so at the risk of re'hashing an old topic, Is there anybody out there who has switched from Tbi to carb? I have a 91 2500 5.7 4l80e, w/ 198k on her, I now live in a state w/no smog testing, in the next month or so I am going to be putting it up on blocks for much needed repairs, one of which is to swap to some vortec heads I have, in looking for a new intake maniflod and larger Tbi to go with the new heads I have started thinking about the tbi swap. I remember a guy on this board who was talking and asking about this very same swap "though on an older truck" but I never saw any further postings on this at all. I'm pretty sure its possable but was wondering how the computer reacted to it, as far as timing, etc? I already have good cold air intake, headers magnaflow exhaust and an Edelbrock cam installed, and though the truck performs pretty well I can tell It needs fed a bit more, after I install the better flowing heads it will no doubt starve for more fuel/air. I would like to hear from someone who has made this swap successfully, or if it was not a success. I would appreciate some advice here, Thanks wafrederick 06-08-2006, 07:10 PM Stay with the tbi and fuel injection runs better than a carburator fuzzypuppy 06-10-2006, 05:26 PM Ok Wafrederick, you think "stay w/ Tbi? runs better?, I honestly would like to hear the details. the reason I wanted to swap are several, carbs are cheaper all the way around, me being an old school hotrod type person can tune in a Holly or a carter in a hot tick, which brings up the fact that I can tune the thing w/o a puter hooked up to it or chipping it, as well I can tune it to what I want not what the puter thinks it should be, if I want economy, or max hp I can tune it there, I can get a pack of jets for a carb pretty reasonable instead of new injectors etc, which are expensive. I have the same problem with my truck as so many on this site do, "the infamous (roaming idle)", though it's not too bad anymore, I dont want it at all, and as of now after alot of testing and ruling out suspected bad parts I can only believe it is caused by the computers slow speed, ie, the sensing and subsequent adjustment of timing, and air fuel mixture by the slow computer, I never had the roaming idle problem with a cab engine. The cam I installed in the truck was very limited by the computer and Tbi, I would like more cam to go with my new vortec heads, not a ton just a bit, but have been informed by every speed shop cam/engine tech that the cam I have now is at the very limit of what the computer and Tbi can calibrate to. I am looking to pull as close to 400 hp out of this engine as I can after the overhaul I am planning. I have researched Tbi mods and yes I can have my tbi bored out and surfaced, new high psi injectors, new computer chipping etc,to bring myTbi up to a 650 cfm range, for the cost of around $650.00, not including the new after market fuel pump etc. But then again after all this I would be stuck as to what it is, tuning is still very limited. In defence of the Tbi settup I have to say they are pretty low maintainance and help fuel econemy. I would love to stick with my stock Tbi because this is going to be a budget rebuild and I do like the MPG, but I have not found a way to get the Hp/torque #'s that I would like out of my stock unit on this budget, hell if it wasn't for the budget I would go TPI, imo, this is really the only way to have the best of both worlds hp/torque + mpg. This is why I posted here, I'm at a bit of a crossroads and stuck on this one point. I believe I have a great starting point for a decient build, strong 4 bolt main small block, nice set of performance heads, the exhaust is tricked, ignition is setup all new MSD, even the trans, though a computer controled 4L80e it is completely beefed, my only soft point and where I'm completely at odds is my fuel/air delivery, I'm open to segestions if you or anyone else knows a way I have not found yet to achieve my goals, not knowing if it is even possably yet I reverted back to what I know and it's a carb, cheap and can get me closer to 400 HP. Anyhow thanks for looking and I do appreciate your response or any others I may get. maybe I should post in the performance section, I think I'll try that as well. wafrederick 06-10-2006, 05:51 PM Fuel injection is a whole lot better. You can get more horsepower with fuel injection.Edelbrock sells a tbi to multi port fuel injection set up for the 1988- 1995 throttle bodied fullsize trucks,350s and 454s.Edelbrock claims better mpg and horsepower fuzzypuppy 06-13-2006, 05:17 PM Thanks for the info wafrederick, I'll check it out, I have checked out some owner operater type shops that say they will build my Tbi better, but the cost is unreal, especialy when I look at other websites and can get a nice Edelbrock carb for no more than $150.00, "used" but hell I used to get and swap used carbs with my buddies all the time. I looked into a 454 Tbi and was given spec's that though possable it was really not the way to go, Iguess I'll keep weighing the options.
