opinion on draining transmsiionfastmoney 05-20-2006, 09:53 PM well i have a 1995 cutlass supreme with 71,000 miles on it a couple of people i know have had trans problems recently so it has me wondering. i read about flush ,draining transmissions and alot of people have different opinions about if u wait to long you shouldn't do it etc. I bought the car used about two thosand miles ago and their is no record of any maintenance on the car. trans fluid looks normal redish color not dirty or brunt smelling. and i was wondering if i should just drain it and refill, or drain and change sceen/filter? any opions would be appreciated. and is this something i could do myself? GTP Dad 05-21-2006, 10:10 AM You need to go ahead and drop the pan and change the fluid and filter. Even though you have no records it is a good idea to change it on a regular basis. A flush is not recommended due to the fact that it can damage the clutches by washing the faces of the clutches to the point where they are damaged. A low mileage transmission can survive a flush but once you get over 50K it is a good ideal just to change fluid and filter. fastmoney 05-21-2006, 07:06 PM well I"ll do it than. ill probaly buy a good brand trans fluid im not sure if it matters also is it any special things to do. does the transmission pan bolts have to be torqued to a specific value/ be put back in the same place they came out from? and do i clean the magnet also? thanks Slade901 05-22-2006, 01:31 PM I would second the dropping of the transmission pan and replace the transmission filter. Just be careful though that removing the transmission filter is somewhat hard to pull out and if the filter breaks apart then part of it might have to be pulled by a pliers where part of the filter goes into a hole below the transmission. fastmoney 05-22-2006, 05:13 PM you say pull out ? so your saying that the transmission filter is pushed on not screwed on like an oil filter?
