Needs Help fixing tank filler mechanismDyno247365 05-20-2006, 01:54 PM Ever since I've owned this car, I've had to get to the gas cap by opening the trunk and pulling on a cable. Now it finally broke off. I need to fix all of this before I go insane, thinking it's normal. Where do I start? What do i need to buy? Dyno247365 05-21-2006, 03:03 AM Let me make it easier to understand, when I attempt to open the gas door from the driver's side, nothing happens, it's detached. Recently in the winter, the mechanism to pop open or lock the gas door broke off finally. I want to replace things so it all works like it did from factory. replace the mechanism and reattach it to the lever next to the driver's seat. I don't know where to start though. Chuki_breath 05-21-2006, 03:10 AM hmmm ill search the fsm to see if it makes it any clearer to figure out what is going on. Chuki_breath 05-21-2006, 03:21 AM thats odd, i couldnt find shit on the gas door or lever..... corning_d3 05-21-2006, 03:25 AM more than likely what happened is the cable broke on both latches. Both jobs will more than likely require removing a lot of stuff(trim pieces, rear seats sometimes) and replacing the whole cable front to back. Seems like the car was built around it one some vehicles.. EDIT: I forgot to mention to check the latch where the cable end connects. The latches are usually plastic and break after repeated use. Chuki_breath 05-21-2006, 03:28 AM its probably the same as changing a hood latch or trunk latch. Maybe a little different but the same concept. I dunno i havent put gas in a 240 in like 5 months lol. It rides on E though......never seems to run out. Dyno247365 05-21-2006, 04:38 AM its probably the same as changing a hood latch or trunk latch. Maybe a little different but the same concept. Mine runs out when it says 1/4 of a tank, and I try to go by the 'never go below half rule'..i'm broke so that went out the window for now. 89'SIL-40 05-21-2006, 10:37 AM The problem with the gas door is probably the cable snapped about 1/2" from the lever. Due to pushing AND pulling that lever for the trunk and the gas door. You need a new complete cable from Nissan, remove driver seat, remove back seats, lift up carpet behind driver's seat. Remove all plastic (rear passenger side....shock tower area) also rocker cover inside driverside door has to come off to access the lever. Good luck.......it's not that hard. Let me know if you have trouble. Chuki_breath 05-21-2006, 12:30 PM yea it shouldnt be to hard. Just takes time to take out all the shit then put it back in. Id just leave it all out. Sounds like fun, I'll need to get on it sometime after I graduate from community college today :grinyes: 89'SIL-40 05-25-2006, 12:38 PM what we're u pulling on from the trunk.....the cable itself????....when it happened to me i went through the trunk but i never pulled a cable......i reached deep in that $H1T and pulled the pin (white w/spring) itself...then to close it i would hold the gas door shut then push the pin back in........But i know how you feel......Like an idiot at the pump when u have to go to the trunk open the door.....pump your gas then reach back in the close it.......waste of 2 minutes everytime!lol....i feel for you man! Thanks..i think, It's really not that because I'm used to it by now (and had to explain few times why) but I know the price of the car will be effected by it. Who wants to buy a drift machine with a broken gas cap door..in such a gasoline conscious era? Other than that, It's HELLA reliable. That stretched timing chain never gave me a problem aside from the annoying sound. I should think about the chain too...I'm trying to get around to fixing the nissan soon. Dyno247365 06-19-2006, 08:07 AM UPDATE: I'm finally getting around to doing this. The plastic part w/ spring cracked off and the cable snapped, so I need all of that. Can I get it anywhere else besides the dealer? What do you think it will cost? Adds- I was just thinking, wouldn't it be cheaper to install a new gas door with a lock on it? Then I wouldn't have to take apart anything. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
