1990 New Yorker Engine/trans Swap

Hi im new to this forum, id like to thank everyone for replying in advance. First of all im looking to buy a 1990 New yorker that has a motor (http://www.chryslerforum.com/m_4639/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#) that overheats and a transmission that will not go in reverse. Car is for sale for $725 but they are a friend of mine and said all i have to pay is $500. I dont know much about it yet but i do know its front wheel drive with a V6.

What i would like to do is replace that with a V8 and convert it to rear wheel (http://www.chryslerforum.com/m_4639/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#) drive. How much time and money will be involved and will the power output be worth it compared to going with a performance V6 turbocharged (FWD). for now thats all i have because that is all i know. Thank you.

You are looking at plenty of work. For example, unless you want to jack the car up at least six inches higher than stock, you will have to fabricate a driveshaft tunnel the full length of the floor and a bellhousing hump under the dash to accommodate the rwd trans. The rear seat (and front, if a bench) will have to be cut to fit over the tunnel, nd you may need additional clearance for the differential in the trunk floor area.

Before you do anything, make sure the transplant will be smog legal in your state! In Cal;ifornia you'd probably have to take a 318 with all the computers, the catalyst, etc. out of a Dakota pickup same year or newer.
